Paper Jam or Paper Feed Issuesexpand_more
Check the input tray first by removing all paper and using a flashlight to locate jammed sheets. Gently pull out any jammed paper with both hands. For jams in the cartridge area, open the cartridge access door, wait for the carriage to idle, then power off and unplug the printer. Slide the carriage to the right to clear the path. For jams underneath, lower the input tray, close the output tray, flip the printer, and open the cleanout door on the bottom. Remove jammed paper and check for torn pieces. Reload paper after clearing all areas and press Resume to continue.
Cartridge or Ink Level Problemsexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light blinks or error messages appear, first ensure cartridges are fully installed and plastic tape is completely removed. If a cartridge error persists, remove the cartridge and check that no plastic tape remains. Clean the gold electrical contacts on both the cartridge and printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the error continues, try the cartridge in a different slot. Consider single cartridge mode if only one cartridge is functioning. Replace cartridges with genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL models when print quality becomes unacceptable.
Printer Not Printing or Unable to Printexpand_more
Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for error messages in the printer software and follow onscreen instructions. Ensure the printer is not paused or set offline by accessing the print queue through Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Verify the printer is set as the default device. For USB connections, disconnect and reconnect the cable. Restart the Print Spooler service through Windows Services. If using a wireless connection, confirm network connectivity by printing the Wireless Network Test Report (press Wireless + Information buttons together). Clear the print queue if jobs are stuck, and restart your computer if needed.
Poor Print Quality or Faded Colorsexpand_more
Verify you are using genuine HP cartridges and high-quality paper such as HP Advanced Photo Paper or ColorLok-certified paper. Check estimated ink levels in the printer software — if cartridges are low on ink, replace them. Align the cartridges through the printer software (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges). Load a blank test page and print a Diagnostic Information page to identify any color block defects. If defects appear, clean the cartridges through the printer software (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Clean Cartridges). Ensure paper is flat and stored properly. For photo printing, use glossy or semi-gloss HP photo paper for best results.
Wireless Connection Fails or Dropsexpand_more
Press the Wireless button to verify wireless is enabled — the Wireless light should be on. Print the Wireless Network Test Report by pressing Wireless + Information buttons together to diagnose connection issues. Ensure your router is powered on and the printer is within range. Move the printer closer to the wireless router to improve signal strength. Check that you entered the correct network password during setup. If connection fails during setup, the printer may be in Auto Wireless Connect mode — use the HP printer software to reconfigure. For intermittent drops, restart both your router and printer. If the Wireless light blinks fast for three seconds and turns off, wireless has been disabled — change wireless settings through the embedded web server (EWS).

  • Keep cartridge plastic tape on until ready to install to reduce ink evaporation and prevent premature nozzle clogging
  • Clean cartridge electrical contacts only with dry, lint-free cloths — never use liquids or abrasive materials
  • Store specialty paper in original packaging inside resealable bags on flat surfaces in cool, dry places to prevent curling
  • Remove printed papers from the output tray frequently and avoid overfilling the input tray to prevent paper jams
  • Check ink levels monthly through the printer control panel display or HP printer software to plan cartridge replacements in advance
