Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the rear power connection port and plug it into a functioning outlet. Press the Power button on the control panel to turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove each HP 65 cartridge from its packaging, pull off the plastic tape using the pull tab, and slide each cartridge into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door when done.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and the print side facing up, then slide the paper down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the paper edge, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.

4

Install Software and Connect Wirelessly

Visit 123.hp.com to download and install the HP printer software or the HP Smart app on your Windows, iOS, or Android device. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your wireless network. Once connected, the Wireless light and Signal Bars icon on the control panel display will remain solid.

Wi-Fi Direct Connection

Wi-Fi Direct lets you print directly from a mobile device without connecting to a wireless router. Press and hold the Wireless button and the Resume button together for three seconds to turn on Wi-Fi Direct — the Wi-Fi Direct icon on the control panel display will illuminate. Search for the printer's Wi-Fi Direct name from your device's Wi-Fi settings and connect. Wi-Fi Direct supports a maximum of five simultaneous device connections.

Printer Won't Print — Page Not Printingexpand_more
Make sure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check the control panel for error codes — the display will show the letter E alongside a number if an error state is active. On Windows, verify the printer is not set to Pause Printing or Use Printer Offline by opening Devices and Printers from the Control Panel. Also confirm the printer is set as the Default Printer, restart the Print Spooler service, and clear the print queue if documents are stuck. Restart the printer and computer if issues persist.
Paper Jam — How to Clear a Jamexpand_more
Start by removing all paper from the input tray and using a flashlight to check for jammed paper or foreign objects. Press the Cancel button to let the printer attempt to auto-clear the jam. If the jam is in the cartridge access area, open the door, wait for the carriage to stop, then power off and unplug the printer before carefully removing jammed paper with both hands. For jams underneath the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, and close the door until both latches snap. After clearing all areas, reload paper and press the Resume button to continue.
Cartridge Error — Ink Alert Light Is Onexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on and an Ink Level icon is blinking, a cartridge may be missing, improperly installed, or still have plastic tape covering the contacts. Open the cartridge access door, remove the affected cartridge, and confirm the plastic pull-tab tape has been fully removed. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the error persists, clean the cartridge contacts using a dry lint-free cloth — wipe only the small gold-colored dots on the cartridge and the corresponding gold contacts inside the printer. If blinking continues after reinstalling, the cartridge may need to be replaced with a genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks, Faded, or Missing Colorsexpand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and check estimated ink levels from the HP printer software or via the Ink Level icons on the control panel. Load fresh Letter or A4 plain white paper and ensure the correct paper type and print quality are selected in the printer software. Run cartridge alignment from the printer software by going to Print & Scan, then Maintain Your Printer, and selecting Align Cartridges. Print a diagnostics page to examine color blocks — if blocks show white lines or are missing, run Clean Cartridges from the Device Services tab. Always turn off the printer using the Power button to prevent cartridges from drying out.
Wireless Not Connecting — Wireless Light Blinkingexpand_more
If the Wireless light is blinking and the Wireless Attention icon is showing on the display, the printer is having trouble connecting to your network. Ensure your wireless router is powered on and the printer is within range. Press the Wireless button and the Information button at the same time to print a Wireless Network Test Report, which will show diagnostics including signal strength and detected networks. If the wireless capability appears fully disabled (light blinks fast for 3 seconds then turns off), go to the wireless settings via the HP printer software or Embedded Web Server to re-enable it. As a last resort, restore network settings and re-run wireless setup from 123.hp.com.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the Power button light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out and clogging the nozzles.
  • Do not open or remove the plastic tape from replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape reduces ink evaporation during storage.
  • Periodically align the cartridges from the HP printer software (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges) using fresh plain white Letter or A4 paper to maintain optimum print quality.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly via the Ink Level icons on the control panel display or through the HP printer software, and keep a replacement cartridge on hand when ink runs low to avoid printing delays.
