Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of paper with the short edge down and print side up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the paper edge and lower the output tray, pulling out the tray extender.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove each HP 65 cartridge from its packaging, peel off the plastic tape using the pull tab, and slide each cartridge into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door when done.

3

Install the HP Printer Software

On Windows, open the HP printer software by double-clicking the printer icon on your desktop or navigating through the Start menu. On Windows 10, click Start, select HP from the app list, and choose the icon with the printer name. Alternatively, install the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com on iOS, Android, or Windows 10 devices.

4

Connect to Your Wireless Network

Press the Wireless button on the control panel to enable wireless capability — the Wireless light will turn on when connected. Use the HP printer software or HP Smart app to complete the wireless setup. You can verify the connection by pressing the Wireless button and Information button simultaneously to print a Wireless Network Test Report.

Wi-Fi Direct (Device-to-Printer)

Wi-Fi Direct allows mobile devices to connect directly to the HP DeskJet 2600 without a wireless router. Enable it by pressing and holding the Wireless button and Resume button together for three seconds until the Wi-Fi Direct icon appears on the display. Up to five devices can connect simultaneously. Print the Wi-Fi Direct Guide by pressing the Information button and Resume button at the same time.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clear. If unsuccessful, check the input tray by removing all paper and using a flashlight to inspect for debris. Also check the output tray area and the cartridge access area — open the cartridge door, wait for the carriage to stop, then power off and unplug before manually removing jammed paper. For jams underneath the printer, turn the unit over, open the cleanout door by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, and close the door until both latches snap into place. Reload paper and press the Resume button to continue printing.
Printer Not Printing (Windows)expand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for error messages in the HP printer software and follow on-screen instructions. Verify the printer is not paused or set to offline by opening Devices and Printers in Control Panel and checking the Printer menu. Confirm the HP DeskJet 2600 is set as the default printer. If issues persist, restart the Print Spooler service via Windows Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue, and restart your computer.
Poor Print Quality or Faded Outputexpand_more
Make sure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and HP-recommended paper with the ColorLok logo. Check estimated ink levels via the printer software and replace cartridges if low. Align the cartridges through the printer toolbox by clicking Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges. If color blocks on a diagnostics page show white lines or missing areas, run the Clean Cartridges function from the Device Services tab. For Mac, use HP Utility to access Clean Printheads — only clean when necessary to avoid excess ink waste.
Cartridge Error or Ink Alert Light Onexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on, first check whether the cartridge is missing or improperly installed. Remove the suspect cartridge and verify the plastic tape has been fully removed from the electrical contacts. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. To isolate which cartridge has a fault, remove one at a time and observe whether the corresponding Ink Level icon on the display blinks. If the error persists after reseating, clean the gold-colored contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth, then reinstall. Replace the cartridge if the problem continues.
Control Panel Error Codes (E1–E6)expand_more
The HP DeskJet 2600 displays error codes as the letter E plus a number on the control panel. E1: Paper width mismatch — change paper size setting or reload correct paper. E2: Paper length mismatch for a multipage job — press Resume to continue or Cancel to stop. E3: Print carriage stall — open cartridge access door, clear obstruction, move carriage right, close door, and press Resume. E4: Paper jam — clear the jam and press Resume. E5: Scanner failure — power the printer off and on; printing still functions. E6: General printer error — unplug the power cord, wait one minute, reconnect, and power on. Contact HP if any error persists.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2600 using the Power button and wait for the Power light to go out before unplugging — this prevents cartridge nozzles from drying out and clogging.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure causes ink evaporation and reduces cartridge life.
  • If a cartridge is removed from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk dried-out nozzles.
  • Regularly align cartridges via the printer software (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges) and run a diagnostics page to catch print quality issues early before they worsen.
