Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including any tape covering the cartridge access door. Connect the power cord to the printer and a functioning power outlet, then press the Power button to turn the printer on. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization cycle before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove each HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge from its packaging, peel off the plastic tape using the pull tab (do not touch the gold electrical contacts), then slide each cartridge into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door when both cartridges are installed securely.

3

Load Paper and Connect Wirelessly

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide to the left, and insert a stack of plain white paper print-side up with the short edge down until it stops. Slide the paper-width guide snugly against the paper edge, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender. Press the Wireless button on the control panel to activate Wi-Fi, then use the HP Smart app or HP printer software to connect the printer to your wireless network.

4

Install Software and Print a Test Page

Download and install the HP printer software on your Windows or macOS computer, or install the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com on your iOS, Android, or Windows 10 device. Open the software, follow the on-screen setup instructions to confirm your wireless connection, then print a test page to verify the printer is working correctly. Press the Information button on the control panel at any time to print a printer information page showing current status.

Wireless Network (Wi-Fi)

Connect the HP DeskJet 2652 to your home Wi-Fi network by pressing the Wireless button on the control panel and using the HP Smart app or HP printer software to complete setup. Once connected, the Wireless light and Signal Bars icon on the control panel display will remain solid. To print a Wireless Network Test Report at any time, press the Wireless button and Information button simultaneously.

Wi-Fi Direct

Wi-Fi Direct allows mobile devices and computers to print directly to the HP DeskJet 2652 without a router or network connection. To enable Wi-Fi Direct, press and hold the Wireless button and Resume button together for three seconds until the Wi-Fi Direct icon appears on the control panel display. Wi-Fi Direct supports up to five simultaneous device connections; print the Wi-Fi Direct Guide by pressing the Information button and Resume button at the same time for full setup instructions.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clear. If unsuccessful, check the input tray by removing all paper and using a flashlight to look for obstructions. Also check the output tray area, the cartridge access area (after turning off and unplugging the printer), and the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer. Always pull jammed paper gently with both hands to avoid tearing. After clearing all jammed paper, reload the input tray and press the Resume button to continue printing.
Cartridge Error or Ink Alert Light Is Onexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on or an Ink Level icon is blinking, first verify that the plastic tape has been fully removed from both cartridges. Remove the indicated cartridge and check that the gold electrical contacts are clean — wipe them gently with a dry lint-free cloth if needed, then clean the corresponding contacts inside the printer. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the error persists, the cartridge may need to be replaced with a genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge. The printer can also operate in single cartridge mode temporarily if one cartridge is removed.
Printer Won't Print or Is Offlineexpand_more
Make sure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. On Windows, open 'Devices and Printers' from the Control Panel and confirm the HP DeskJet 2652 is set as the default printer and is not set to 'Pause Printing' or 'Use Printer Offline.' Restart the Print Spooler service via Windows Administrative Tools and clear any stuck jobs from the print queue. If using a USB connection, disconnect and reconnect the cable. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility (Windows) for automatic diagnosis, or use the HP Smart app for guided troubleshooting on any platform.
Poor Print Quality or Faded Outputexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and that ink levels are not critically low. Check that the correct paper type and print quality settings are selected in the printer software. Load letter or A4 plain white paper and use the printer toolbox (via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer in the HP software) to run 'Align Cartridges' and then 'Print Diagnostic Information.' If the diagnostic page shows missing or faded color blocks, select 'Clean Cartridges' in the toolbox and follow on-screen instructions. On macOS, use HP Utility to align the printhead and run 'Clean Printheads' if streaks persist.
Wireless Connection Problemsexpand_more
If the Wireless light is blinking and the Wireless Attention icon is showing, the printer is having trouble connecting. Press the Wireless button and Information button simultaneously to print a Wireless Network Test Report — this report shows signal strength, detected networks, and connection diagnostics. Make sure your wireless router is powered on and the printer is within range. To reset wireless settings, you can re-run the wireless setup through the HP Smart app. If Wi-Fi Direct is needed, press and hold the Wireless and Resume buttons for three seconds to enable it. The HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows) can also automatically diagnose and fix most wireless connection issues.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the Power light to go out before unplugging — this protects the HP 65 / HP 65XL cartridges from drying out by capping the nozzles properly.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly from the HP printer software (Estimated Levels tab) or by reading the Ink Level icons on the control panel display, and have replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges on hand before levels become critically low.
  • Periodically align the cartridges using the HP printer toolbox (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges) after installing new cartridges or if print quality declines, to ensure accurate color registration and sharp output.
  • Clean the scanner glass regularly with a soft lint-free cloth to ensure scan and copy quality remains sharp — place originals face-down on the right front corner of the scanner glass and close the lid fully before scanning.
