Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the power connection port on the rear of the printer and plug it into a functioning outlet. Press the Power button on the control panel to turn the printer on.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape using the pull tab, and slide each cartridge into its matching color-coded slot until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door.

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and print side facing up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.

Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for error messages in the HP printer software and follow the on-screen instructions. Verify the printer is set as the default printer in your Windows or macOS settings and that the print queue is not paused or offline. Restart the print spooler service if using Windows, or disconnect and reconnect the USB cable if applicable. Restart both the printer and the computer if the issue persists.

Open the HP printer software, click Print and Scan, then Maintain Your Printer, and use the 'Align Cartridges' tool to run an alignment. If the error continues, clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Replace the cartridge if the problem persists. Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2640 using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridge nozzles from drying out.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly from the HP Smart app or printer software 'Estimated Levels' tab, and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid printing delays.
  • Do not open or remove the plastic tape from new HP 65 cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation.
  • Run the cartridge alignment tool from the HP printer software after installing new cartridges to ensure the best possible print quality on your DeskJet 2640.
