HP DeskJet 2640 Manual — Setup, Troubleshooting & Ink Guide
The HP DeskJet 2640 is a compact wireless all-in-one inkjet printer that lets you print, scan, and copy from virtually anywhere using the HP Smart app on iOS, Android, or Windows 10. It uses HP 65 and HP 65XL ink cartridges and features Wi-Fi Direct for easy mobile printing. This page covers complete setup instructions, wireless configuration, troubleshooting, and cartridge maintenance.
Product Setup
Unbox and Power On
Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the power connection port on the rear of the printer and plug it into a functioning outlet. Press the Power button on the control panel to turn the printer on.
Install the Ink Cartridges
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape using the pull tab, and slide each cartridge into its matching color-coded slot until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door.
Load Paper into the Input Tray
Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and print side facing up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.
Install Software and Connect Wirelessly
Download and install the HP printer software or the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com on your iOS, Android, or Windows 10 device. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the HP DeskJet 2640 to your wireless network. Once connected, the Wireless light and Signal Bars icon on the control panel display will remain solid.
Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
WiFi Connection Guide
Wireless Network Setup (WPS)
Press the Wireless button on the printer to enable Wi-Fi. Use WPS push-button mode by pressing the Wireless button and following the on-screen prompts in the HP Smart app or printer software to connect the DeskJet 2640 to your home or office router. The Wireless light stays solid when successfully connected.
Wi-Fi Direct (Direct Device Connection)
Wi-Fi Direct lets you print from a mobile device without a router. Press and hold the Wireless button and the Resume button together for three seconds to enable Wi-Fi Direct. Search for the printer's Wi-Fi Direct name from your device's Wi-Fi settings and connect. Wi-Fi Direct supports up to five simultaneous device connections.

Important Safety Instructions
- Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2640 using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridge nozzles from drying out.
- Check estimated ink levels regularly from the HP Smart app or printer software 'Estimated Levels' tab, and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid printing delays.
- Do not open or remove the plastic tape from new HP 65 cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation.
- Run the cartridge alignment tool from the HP printer software after installing new cartridges to ensure the best possible print quality on your DeskJet 2640.
