Unbox and Power On

Remove the HP DeskJet 2621 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface. Connect the power cord to the rear power connection port and plug it into a functioning outlet. Press the Power button on the control panel to turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black cartridges from their packaging, pull off the plastic tape using the pull tab, and slide each cartridge into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door when done.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and print side up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.

4

Install Software and Connect

Download and install the HP printer software on your Windows or macOS computer, or install the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com on your iOS, Android, or Windows 10 device. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your wireless network. Once connected, the Wireless light and Signal Bars icon on the control panel will remain solid.

Printer Won't Print — Unable to Print Issuesexpand_more
Make sure the printer is turned on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for error messages in the HP printer software and resolve them using the on-screen instructions. Verify the printer is not paused or set to offline mode by opening Devices and Printers in the Windows Control Panel. If problems persist, restart the Print Spooler service from Windows Administrative Tools and clear the print queue. Reconnect the USB or wireless connection and try printing again.
Paper Jam — How to Clear Jamsexpand_more
Start by clearing the input tray first — remove all paper and use a flashlight to check for debris in the paper path. Next, check the output tray area and remove any jammed paper gently with both hands to avoid tearing. If the jam is in the cartridge access area, open the door, turn off the printer, unplug the power cord, and carefully remove jammed paper from the carriage path. For jams underneath the printer, turn it over, open the cleanout door by pulling both tabs, remove jammed paper, and close the door until it snaps into place. Press the Resume button after clearing all jams.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks, Fading, or Missing Colorsexpand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and high-quality paper such as HP paper with the ColorLok logo. Check estimated ink levels through the HP printer software and replace any low cartridges. Open the printer toolbox from the HP software and use the 'Align Cartridges' tool on the Device Services tab to print an alignment page. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page and run the 'Clean Cartridges' function from the same Device Services tab. On macOS, open HP Utility, select your printer, and click 'Clean Printheads' to resolve the issue.
Cartridge Error — Ink Alert Light On or Blinkingexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on and an Ink Level icon is blinking, a cartridge may be missing, improperly installed, or still have plastic tape on the contacts. Open the cartridge access door, remove the indicated cartridge, and verify the plastic pull tab tape has been completely removed. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the error persists, clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Replace the cartridge with a genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL if the issue continues. If both ink icons and the Error icon are all blinking, both cartridges may need attention.
Wireless Connection Problems — Printer Offline or Not Connectingexpand_more
Press the Wireless button and the Information button at the same time to print a Wireless Network Test Report and Network Configuration Page — review the report for diagnostic details. Make sure your wireless router is powered on and the printer is within range. If the Wireless light blinks and the Wireless Attention icon appears, the printer may have failed to connect; press the Wireless button and Information button together to run the wireless test. To reset the wireless settings, press and hold the Wireless button for three seconds. For Wi-Fi Direct issues, ensure the Wi-Fi Direct icon is on and that no more than five devices are already connected.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2621 using the Power button and wait for the Power button light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out and clogging the nozzles.
  • Do not open or remove the plastic tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape reduces ink evaporation and keeps nozzles protected.
  • Periodically align the cartridges using the 'Align Cartridges' tool in the HP printer software Device Services tab to maintain optimal print quality, especially after replacing cartridges.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly from the HP printer software or from the Ink Level icons on the control panel display, and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid unexpected printing delays.
