HP DeskJet 2636 Manual — Setup, Troubleshooting & WiFi Guide
The HP DeskJet 2636 is a compact all-in-one inkjet printer offering wireless printing, scanning, and copying for home users. It uses HP 65 and HP 65XL ink cartridges and connects via Wi-Fi or USB for flexible setup. This page covers everything from initial setup and loading paper to troubleshooting common issues and maintaining your cartridges.
Product Setup
Unbox and Power On
Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including inside the cartridge access door. Connect the power cord to the rear power connection port and press the Power button to turn the printer on.
Install the Ink Cartridges
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the plastic tape from both the HP 65 black and tri-color cartridges, then slide each into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until they click into place. Close the cartridge access door.
Load Paper into the Input Tray
Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain paper with the short edge down and the print side up, then slide the guide snugly against the paper edge. Lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.
Install Software and Connect
Download and install the HP printer software on your Windows or Mac computer, or install the HP Smart app on your iOS, Android, or Windows 10 device from 123.hp.com. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect the printer to your wireless network and complete setup.
Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Important Safety Instructions
- Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2636 using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this caps the cartridge heads and prevents HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
- Check estimated ink levels regularly via the Ink Level icons on the control panel display or in the HP printer software, and keep a spare HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid print delays.
- Run the cartridge alignment tool after installing new HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges to ensure optimal print quality — access it via Print and Scan > Maintain Your Printer in the HP printer software.
- Keep the scanner glass clean and free of smudges or debris by wiping it gently with a soft lint-free cloth to ensure accurate scans and copies from the HP DeskJet 2636.
