Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including inside the cartridge access door. Connect the power cord to the rear power connection port and press the Power button to turn the printer on.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the plastic tape from both the HP 65 black and tri-color cartridges, then slide each into the correct slot at a slight upward angle until they click into place. Close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain paper with the short edge down and the print side up, then slide the guide snugly against the paper edge. Lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.

Make sure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to Paused or Use Printer Offline in your computer's Devices and Printers settings. Verify the HP DeskJet 2636 is set as the default printer. Try restarting the Print Spooler service on Windows, clearing the print queue, and restarting your computer. Reconnect the USB cable or verify the wireless connection is active.

Ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and that ink levels are not critically low. Check that the correct paper type and print quality settings are selected in the printer software. Run the cartridge alignment tool from the printer software under Print and Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page and then run the Clean Cartridges tool from the Device Services tab.

If the Ink Alert light is on, check that both the HP 65 black and tri-color cartridges are properly installed and that all plastic tape has been removed. Remove and reinsert the indicated cartridge. If the error persists, clean the gold electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Avoid touching the contacts with your fingers. Replace the cartridge if cleaning does not resolve the issue.
Printer Not Connecting to Wi-Fiexpand_more
Press the Wireless button and the Information button at the same time to print a Wireless Network Test Report and Network Configuration Page. Confirm your router is powered on and the printer is within range. If the Wireless Attention icon is blinking, the printer cannot find your network. Try moving the printer closer to your router and re-running the wireless setup through the HP Smart app or HP printer software. Firewall or antivirus software may also block the connection and should be temporarily disabled to test.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2636 using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this caps the cartridge heads and prevents HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly via the Ink Level icons on the control panel display or in the HP printer software, and keep a spare HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid print delays.
  • Run the cartridge alignment tool after installing new HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges to ensure optimal print quality — access it via Print and Scan > Maintain Your Printer in the HP printer software.
  • Keep the scanner glass clean and free of smudges or debris by wiping it gently with a soft lint-free cloth to ensure accurate scans and copies from the HP DeskJet 2636.
