Unpack & Connect Power

Remove the printer from packaging and verify all components are present including the power cord, USB cable, and cartridges. Connect the power cord to a grounded outlet and press the Power button to turn on the printer.

Install HP 65 or 65XL Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Remove plastic tape from new cartridges, insert them into the correct color-coded slots at a slight upward angle, and push up until they click into place.

Load Paper & Install Software

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide to the left, and insert paper with the print side up. Lower the output tray and pull out the extender. Install the HP printer software from the included CD or download from hp.com.

Set Up Wireless (Optional)

Press the Wireless button to enable wireless capabilities. Use the HP Smart app or printer software to select your network and enter the password. The Wireless light will indicate when the connection is established.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Wireless Network Setup

Press the Wireless button and use the HP printer software or HP Smart app to connect to your network. The printer will automatically detect your network and display the Wireless light when connected.

Wi-Fi Direct Connection

Press and hold the Wireless and Resume buttons for three seconds to enable Wi-Fi Direct. Search for the printer name on your device and connect directly without a router for scanning and printing.

Remove all paper from the input tray and gently pull out any jammed paper. For jams in the cartridge access area, open the cartridge door, wait for the carriage to stop, then gently remove paper. For jams underneath, flip the printer over and open the cleanout door on the bottom. Always press the Resume button after clearing to continue printing.

Check the Ink Alert light and Ink Level icons on the control panel. If a cartridge is not detected, remove it and verify the plastic tape has been removed completely. Wipe the gold electrical contacts with a dry lint-free cloth on both the cartridge and printer. Reinstall and close the cartridge access door. If the error persists, the cartridge may need replacement.

Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded. Check that the printer is not paused or offline by accessing Devices and Printers on your computer. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable or confirm wireless connection by pressing the Wireless and Information buttons together to print a network test report. Restart the print spooler if using Windows.

Verify you are using original HP cartridges and they are not low on ink. Use ColorLok-certified or HP paper for best results. Open the printer software and select the correct paper type and print quality settings. Run the Align Cartridges tool from the printer toolbox, then print a test page. If quality is still poor, use the Clean Cartridges feature to clear the print nozzles.

Press the Wireless button to turn on wireless capabilities. If the light blinks fast for three seconds then turns off, wireless is disabled. Press the Wireless and Information buttons together to print a network test report for diagnostics. Ensure your router is powered on and the printer is within range. For Wi-Fi Direct issues, verify the Wi-Fi Direct icon is on and your device supports the connection.

  • Always turn off the printer using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before leaving unattended
  • Keep cartridges sealed with plastic tape until ready to install to prevent ink nozzles from drying out
