Wi-Fi Direct - Print Without Router

Paper Jam in Input Trayexpand_more
Remove all paper from the input tray, including jammed pieces. Lift the input tray shield and use a flashlight to check for paper or debris in the paper path. Gently pull jammed paper with both hands. Press the Cancel button to allow the printer to clear the jam automatically. Do not remove the input tray shield as it prevents foreign debris from entering the paper path.
Cartridge Error Messagesexpand_more
Check the Ink Alert light and Ink Level icons on the control panel. Remove cartridges and verify protective plastic tape has been removed completely. Wipe cartridge contacts (small gold dots) and printer contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth. Reinstall cartridges firmly until they click into place. If error persists, the cartridge may be counterfeit, previously used, or damaged and should be replaced with genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges.
Printer Not Printingexpand_more
Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check HP Smart app for error messages and follow on-screen instructions. For wireless connections, confirm the wireless light is steady blue and signal bars are visible. Ensure the printer is not paused or offline by checking the print queue in Windows Devices and Printers. Restart the print spooler service if needed. If using USB connection, verify the printer is set as default. Clear the print queue and restart your computer if problems persist.
Wireless Connection Issuesexpand_more
Verify the printer and wireless router are powered on and the wireless radio is enabled (light next to Wireless button should be steady blue). Check the Signal Bars icon on the display—if only 1-2 bars show, move the printer closer to the router (within 30 m/100 ft). Press Wireless and Information buttons together to print the Wireless Network Test Report and Network Configuration Page. Check the DIAGNOSTICS RESULTS section for failed tests and follow recommended steps. Restore network settings by pressing Wireless and Cancel buttons for 3 seconds, then reconnect using HP Smart app.
Poor Print Qualityexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges. Check that you are using quality paper—HP paper or ColorLok® certified paper is recommended for best results. In printer software, select the correct paper type from the Media dropdown and appropriate Quality Settings. Check estimated ink levels; if cartridges are low, consider replacing them. Align the cartridges through the printer toolbox (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges). Print a diagnostics page to check for white lines or faded color blocks. Clean cartridges through the printer toolbox if diagnostics show defects.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the printer using the Power button and wait for internal sounds to stop before unplugging to protect cartridges from drying out
  • Keep replacement HP 65 and HP 65XL cartridges in original sealed packaging at room temperature (15-35°C / 59-95°F) until needed
  • Clean cartridge contacts only with dry, lint-free cloth if error messages appear; do not leave cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes
  • Avoid unnecessary printhead cleaning as it wastes ink; only clean when print quality noticeably deteriorates
  • Check ink levels regularly through HP Smart app or printer software; replace cartridges when print quality becomes unacceptable, not just when low-ink warnings appear
  • Remove printed papers from output tray frequently and never overfill the input tray to prevent paper jams
