Connect with HP Smart App

Download the HP Smart app on your iOS, Android, Windows, or Mac device. Ensure Bluetooth is enabled on mobile devices and the printer is in Auto Wireless Connect (AWC) setup mode with a blinking blue Wireless button light.

Select Your Network

Open HP Smart and tap or click the Plus icon. Select your printer from the list, or tap "Add Printer" if it does not appear. Follow the on-screen instructions to add your printer to your wireless network.

Verify Connection Status

Once connected, the Wireless button light will glow steady blue. You can now print wirelessly from computers, smartphones, and tablets on your network.

Install Printer Software (Optional)

For enhanced features and printer management, visit 123.hp.com to download and install the HP printer software for Windows or macOS to your computer.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Connect via WPS Push Button

Press and hold the Wireless button for 3+ seconds, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. The Wireless button light will glow steady blue when successfully connected.

Use Wi-Fi Direct Connection

Enable Wi-Fi Direct by pressing and holding the Wireless and Resume buttons together for 3 seconds. Connect up to 5 devices without a router. The Wi-Fi Direct name appears as DIRECT-**-HP DeskJet 4100 series.

Paper Jam in Input Trayexpand_more
Remove all paper from the input tray. Lift and hold the input tray shield and use a flashlight to locate jammed paper or foreign objects. Gently pull any jammed paper with both hands to avoid tearing. Press the Cancel button to allow the printer to attempt automatic clearing.

Verify that the protective plastic tape has been removed from the cartridge before installation. Open the cartridge access door, remove the indicated cartridge, and clean the gold-colored electrical contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks into place. If the error persists, the cartridge may be incompatible or damaged.

Ensure the printer's Wireless button light glows steady blue. Check the Signal Bars icon on the display - if only 1-2 bars show, move the printer closer to your router (within 30 meters/100 feet). Press the Wireless button and Information button together to print a Wireless Network Test Report. Verify your printer is connected to the same network as your computer or mobile device.

Ensure you are using original HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Check estimated ink levels in the HP Smart app or printer software - replace cartridges if low. Use high-quality HP paper or ColorLok® certified paper for best results. Align the cartridges through the printer software toolbox (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges). Run a print diagnostics page to check for defects in color blocks.

Verify the printer is turned on and has paper loaded in the input tray. Check for error messages in HP Smart and resolve them. For Windows, confirm the printer is not paused or set offline in Devices and Printers. Verify the printer is set as your default printer. Restart the print spooler service if needed, then restart your computer. Clear the print queue by canceling all documents.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the printer using the Power button and wait for internal motion to stop before unplugging
  • Do not open or untape cartridges until ready to install - keep them in original sealed packaging to reduce ink evaporation
  • Store cartridges at room temperature (15-35°C / 59-95°F) and avoid transporting the printer on its side, back, front, or top
  • Do not clean the printhead unnecessarily as this wastes ink - only clean when experiencing print quality issues
  • Replace cartridges when print quality becomes unacceptable; you do not need to replace at the first low-ink warning
