Paper Jam in Input Trayexpand_more
Remove all paper from the input tray, including both loose and jammed paper. Lift and hold the input tray shield and use a flashlight to check for jammed paper or foreign objects in the paper path. Gently pull out any jammed paper with both hands. Press the Cancel button to let the printer try clearing the jam automatically. Do not remove the input tray shield as it prevents foreign debris from entering the paper path.
Cartridge Error or Not Detectedexpand_more
Remove the cartridges and verify the protective plastic tape has been completely removed from each cartridge. Reinstall the cartridges securely, ensuring they click into place. Clean the cartridge contacts and printer contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth if errors persist. Check the Ink Level icons on the display to identify which cartridge has a problem. If one cartridge is missing or faulty, the printer will enter single cartridge mode.
Wireless Connection Issuesexpand_more
Verify the wireless router and printer are powered on and the Wireless button light is steady blue. Check the Signal Bars icon on the display—if only 1-2 bars show, move the printer closer to the router (within 30 meters). Press Wireless and Information buttons together to print the Wireless Network Test Report and check diagnostics results. Restore network settings by pressing Wireless and Cancel buttons together for 3 seconds, then reconnect using HP Smart.
Poor Print Qualityexpand_more
Use original HP cartridges and verify adequate ink levels in the Estimated Levels tab of printer software or HP Smart app. Select the correct paper type in print settings and ensure paper is flat and not curled. Align the cartridges through the printer toolbox under 'Maintain Your Printer.' Print a diagnostics page to check for white lines or faded color blocks. If needed, clean the cartridges through the Device Services tab. For best results, use HP paper or papers meeting the ColorLok standard.
Printer Not Printingexpand_more
Check for error messages in HP Smart app or printer software and follow onscreen instructions. Verify the printer is turned on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Confirm wireless connection is active and the printer is not paused or offline in Windows Devices and Printers. Verify the 4120e is set as the default printer. Restart the print spooler service (Windows) or disconnect/reconnect the USB cable (Mac). Clear the print queue if documents are stuck. Restart your computer if issues persist.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the printer properly using the Power button and wait for internal motion to stop before unplugging
  • Keep cartridges in original sealed packaging until ready to install; store at room temperature (15-35°C / 59-95°F)
  • Do not clean the printhead unnecessarily as this wastes ink; only clean when print quality becomes unacceptable
  • Replace cartridges when print quality declines rather than waiting for empty indicators; cartridge yield information available at www.hp.com/go/learnaboutsupplies
  • When transporting the printer, keep it flat and leave cartridges installed to prevent ink leakage
