Paper Jam or Paper Feed Issuesexpand_more
Clear paper jams by first checking the input tray and removing all jammed paper. Lift and hold the input tray shield and use a flashlight to locate obstructions. Then check the output tray, cartridge access area, and document feeder. For jams underneath the printer, turn it over and open the cleanout door on the bottom. After clearing, press Cancel to allow the printer to clear automatically. To prevent jams: don't overfill the input tray, remove printed papers frequently, ensure paper is flat and unstuck, and don't force paper too far down.
Cartridge Problems or Low Inkexpand_more
Check ink levels from the control panel Ink Level icons, HP Smart app, or printer software Estimated Levels tab. If you receive a cartridge error, remove the cartridge, verify the plastic tape is removed, and reinsert securely. Clean cartridge contacts with a dry lint-free cloth if errors persist. To order HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges, visit www.hp.com/buy/supplies. Consider enrolling in HP Instant Ink for automatic cartridge delivery at hpinstantink.com. Align cartridges from the printer software Maintain Your Printer section for best print quality.
Printer Won't Print or Print Quality Issuesexpand_more
Verify paper is loaded in the input tray and the printer is turned on. Check for error messages in HP Smart or printer software and follow onscreen instructions. Ensure the printer is not paused or offline through Windows Devices and Printers. Verify it's set as the default printer. Restart the print spooler through Windows Services if needed. For print quality issues, verify you're using original HP cartridges, check the paper type (use high-quality HP paper or ColorLok standard), select appropriate paper type in printer software, and align cartridges. If issues persist, print a diagnostic page and clean the cartridges through the printer toolbox.
Wireless Connection Failureexpand_more
Verify the printer and wireless router are powered on and the wireless radio is enabled (Wireless button light should be steady blue). Check the Signal Bars icon—if only one or two bars show, move the printer within 30 m (100 ft) of the router. Press Wireless and Information buttons simultaneously to print the Wireless Network Test Report and check for failures. Restore network settings by pressing Wireless and Cancel buttons for 3 seconds, then reconnect using HP Smart. Disconnect from any VPN on your computer before attempting to connect. Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows only) to diagnose automatically. Visit www.hp.com/go/wirelessprinting for more troubleshooting assistance.
Wi-Fi Direct Connection Issuesexpand_more
Ensure Wi-Fi Direct is enabled on the printer—press and hold Wireless and Resume buttons for 3 seconds (Wi-Fi Direct icon should show on display). Press Information button to print the Wi-Fi Direct name and password. On your device, turn on Wi-Fi and select the network named 'DIRECT-**-HP DeskJet 4100 series.' If security is set to Manual, enter the correct password or PIN when prompted. If the Information light blinks white, press the button within 30 seconds. Verify no more than five devices are connected. Mobile devices without Wi-Fi Direct support need a compatible printing app from www.hp.com/go/mobileprinting.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the printer properly using the Power button and wait until all internal sounds stop before unplugging to protect cartridges from drying out
  • Keep cartridges in original sealed packages until needed and store at room temperature (15-35°C or 59-95°F) to maintain ink quality
  • Remove printed papers from the output tray frequently and ensure paper in the input tray is flat and not bent or torn to prevent paper jams
  • When transporting the printer, leave cartridges installed and keep the printer flat to prevent ink leaks and damage
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly and consider having replacement HP 65/65XL cartridges available to avoid printing delays
  • Do not clean the printhead unnecessarily as this wastes ink and shortens cartridge life
