Load Paper and Media

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide left, and insert a stack of plain paper with the short edge down and print side up. For envelopes or photo paper, insert from the far-right side of the tray. Adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against your media.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and install the HP 65 or HP 65XL black and tri-color cartridges, matching the color and icons to each slot. Make sure cartridges snap firmly into place and remove any plastic protective tape before installation.

3

Connect Wirelessly or via USB

For wireless setup, press and hold the Wireless button to enable WPS mode, then press your router's WPS button. Alternatively, use HP printer software to connect to your 802.11b/g/n network. For USB connection, attach the printer to your computer with a USB cable.

4

Configure Printer Settings

Access the embedded web server (EWS) to customize paper size detection, enable Quiet Mode for quieter printing, and configure sleep mode timing. These settings optimize your printer for your specific workflow and preferences.

Paper Jams and Feed Issuesexpand_more
Check for jams in the input tray, output tray, cartridge access area, and inside the printer. Press Cancel to attempt automatic clearing first. For internal jams, open the cleanout door on the printer bottom and remove jammed paper. Always use caution and never use tools. Prevent future jams by not overfilling the input tray, using flat paper, and keeping the paper-width guide properly adjusted.
Ink Cartridge Problemsexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on or Ink Level icons are blinking, verify both cartridges are properly installed without plastic tape. Check that you are using authentic HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Remove and reinstall cartridges, or clean the electrical contacts with a dry lint-free cloth if errors persist. If one cartridge is defective, you can operate in single-cartridge mode by removing the problem cartridge.
Print Quality Issuesexpand_more
Verify you are using original HP cartridges and high-quality paper such as ColorLok-certified paper or HP Advanced Photo Paper. Check ink levels and replace cartridges if low. Align the ink cartridges using the printer software maintenance tools. If print quality is still poor, run the automated cartridge cleaning function from the printer software. Ensure paper is flat and stored in cool, dry conditions.
Wireless Connection Problemsexpand_more
Press the Wireless button and Information button together to print a network test report. Ensure your router is powered on and supports 802.11b/g/n on 2.4 GHz. Move the printer closer to the wireless router if signal is weak. Verify the correct network name (SSID) and password are used during setup. Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility (Windows) or online troubleshooting wizard for step-by-step wireless diagnostics.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not paused or offline in your operating system's printer settings. Confirm the printer is set as your default printer. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable if connected via USB, or verify wireless connection status. Restart the print spooler service and try printing again. Contact HP support if the printer still does not respond.
