Load Paper and Media

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide to the left, and insert your paper with the print side up. Slide the paper-width guide to the right until it stops at the edge. For small-size paper or envelopes, load them on the far-right side of the input tray.

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and insert HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges into the correct colored slots. Make sure the cartridges snap into place securely and remove any plastic protective tape before installation.

Power On and Install Software

Press the Power button to turn on the printer. Visit 123.hp.com to download and install the HP printer software on your computer. During installation, you may be prompted to connect a USB cable temporarily.

Connect Wirelessly

Choose between WPS push-button method, PIN method, or standard WiFi connection through the printer software. The Wireless light will remain steady once successfully connected to your network.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WiFi Protected Setup (WPS)

Press and hold the Wireless button for 3+ seconds to activate WPS mode, then press the WPS button on your router. Connection completes in approximately 2 minutes. Supports both push-button and PIN methods for maximum compatibility.

Press the Wi-Fi Direct button on the control panel to enable direct wireless connection without a router. Connect up to 5 devices simultaneously. Ideal for mobile printing from smartphones, tablets, and computers in any location.

Press the Cancel button to attempt automatic clearing. If unsuccessful, gently pull the jammed paper from the tray. Check for any foreign objects in the paper path and reload paper. Press Resume to continue printing. Do not remove the input tray shield as it prevents debris from entering the paper path.

Check the Ink Alert light and Ink Level icons on the control panel. Remove cartridges and verify plastic protective tape has been removed. Clean the cartridge contacts using a dry, lint-free cloth and reinstall. If the error persists, replace the cartridges with genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Low ink warnings provide estimates only; replace when print quality becomes unacceptable.

Use original HP ink cartridges and high-quality paper with the ColorLok logo. Verify correct paper type and print quality settings in the printer software. Run the Align Ink Cartridges utility from the printer toolbox. If streaks persist, use the Clean Ink Cartridges function. Print a diagnostic page to verify color boxes are complete and vibrant.
Wireless Connection Drops or Cannot Connectexpand_more
Press the Wireless button and Information button together to print the wireless network test report. Ensure your router is powered on and supports 2.4GHz frequencies. Move the printer closer to the router. Verify the network name (SSID) and password are correct. If using WPS and the light blinks for 3 seconds then turns off, wireless has been disabled. Update wireless settings through the embedded web server.

Verify the power cord is firmly connected to a functioning outlet. Check that the printer is set as the default printer in Windows Devices and Printers. Verify the printer is not paused or offline by checking the Printer menu. If Auto-Off is enabled, the printer powers down after 2 hours of inactivity. Restart the print spooler service on your computer and attempt to print a test page.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always power off using the Power button and wait until the light goes out to protect cartridges from drying out
  • Do not open or untape cartridges until ready to install; keep tape on to reduce ink evaporation
  • Replace cartridges only when print quality becomes unacceptable, not when low-ink warnings appear
  • If a cartridge is removed, reinstall it as soon as possible to prevent drying; do not leave cartridges unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes
  • Store specialty photo paper in original packaging inside a resealable plastic bag on a flat surface in a cool, dry place
