1

Unbox and Prepare the Printer

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including any pink protective tape from the ink cartridges. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface near your computer and a power outlet. Open the output tray before powering on, as printing cannot begin until the output tray is open.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Insert the HP 65 tri-color cartridge into the left slot and the HP 65 black cartridge into the right slot, matching the color icons on each slot. Press each cartridge firmly until it snaps into place, then close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Install Software

Load a stack of plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against the paper. Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the latest driver from hp.com/support. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the software installation.

4

Align the Ink Cartridges

After installation, align the cartridges for optimal print quality by opening the printer software and navigating to Print & Scan, then Maintain Your Printer. Click 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab, and the printer will print an alignment sheet. Place the alignment sheet print-side down on the scanner glass and press the Start Copy Black button to complete alignment.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

If your router has a WPS button, press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2549 for more than 3 seconds until the wireless light starts blinking, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. The printer supports 2.4GHz wireless networks (802.11b/g/n) and the wireless light will stop blinking and remain solid once successfully connected.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router Needed)

HP Wireless Direct lets you connect smartphones, tablets, and computers directly to the HP DeskJet 2549 without a wireless router or access point. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable it — the first time it is activated, an information page with connection details and the security password will print automatically. The Wireless Direct status light will remain solid when active.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First, ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and check estimated ink levels in the printer software under Print & Scan. If cartridges are not low, open the printer toolbox via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer and click 'Print Diagnostic Information' to print a diagnostics page. If the color or black boxes show streaks or missing sections, use the 'Clean Ink Cartridges' option on the Device Services tab, then re-run the alignment tool by clicking 'Align Ink Cartridges.'
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull the jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area depending on where it is stuck. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, then close the door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the input tray, always use the same paper type and size per load, and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the paper.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Make sure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to 'Pause Printing' or 'Use Printer Offline' by opening the print queue via Devices and Printers in Control Panel. Verify the HP DeskJet 2549 is set as the default printer (it should show a checkmark in a black or green circle). If issues persist, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue, and restart your computer. You can also download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool for automated diagnosis.
Ink Cartridge Problem or Error Light Blinkingexpand_more
If both ink cartridge lights are blinking, first confirm that the pink protective tape has been removed from both HP 65 cartridges and that they are fully seated. If the lights continue to blink, remove the black cartridge and close the cartridge access door — if the On button blinks rapidly, replace the tri-color cartridge; if it does not blink, replace the black cartridge. For contact-related errors, use a dry lint-free cloth to gently wipe the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer, then reinstall the cartridge. Do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes to avoid printhead damage.
Unable to Copy or Scanexpand_more
For copy and scan issues on Windows, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor, which can automatically diagnose and resolve most common scanning problems. Ensure the cartridge access door is fully closed and the output tray is open, as the printer cannot operate without these conditions met. If the scanner glass has smudges or debris, gently clean it with a soft lint-free cloth. For persistent issues, visit hp.com/support for the HP DeskJet 2549 online troubleshooting resources.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the HP DeskJet 2549 off using the On button and wait for the power light to go out before unplugging — this parks the cartridges properly and prevents HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape prevents ink evaporation during storage.
  • If you remove a cartridge for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — leaving cartridges unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes can damage the printhead.
  • When the printer software shows one or both HP 65 cartridges at a low ink level, order replacement cartridges promptly to avoid printing delays; you do not need to replace them until print quality becomes unacceptable.
