1

Unbox and Power On

Remove the HP DeskJet 2546 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface. Connect the power cord and press the On button to power up the printer. Wait for the On button light to remain steady before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the pink protective tape from both the HP 65 tri-color and black ink cartridges, then insert each into the correct slot matching the color and icon. Press firmly until each cartridge snaps into place.

3

Install Printer Software

Insert the included software CD into your computer or download the latest drivers from hp.com/support. Follow the on-screen instructions and select either a Wireless or USB connection when prompted on the Connection Options screen. Do not connect the USB cable until the installer specifically asks you to do so.

4

Align the Cartridges and Run a Test Print

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray, then open the printer software and navigate to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Ink Cartridges. Place the printed alignment sheet face-down on the scanner glass and press Start Copy Black to complete alignment. Run a test page to confirm everything is working correctly.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

If your router has a WPS button, press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2546 for more than 3 seconds until the wireless light begins blinking, then press the WPS button on your router. The printer will automatically connect to your 2.4GHz wireless network within approximately two minutes, and the wireless light will stop blinking and remain solid when the connection is successful.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router Needed)

HP Wireless Direct lets you print from smartphones, tablets, or laptops directly to the HP DeskJet 2546 without needing a wireless router or access point. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable this mode — on first use, an information page will print automatically with connection details and the default password. The Wireless Direct status light will remain solid when active.

How do I improve print quality on the HP DeskJet 2546?expand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges. Open the printer software and go to Print & Scan > Set Preferences to verify the correct paper type and print quality are selected. Check estimated ink levels and replace any low cartridges. Then align the cartridges via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Ink Cartridges, and if streaks persist, print a diagnostics page and use the Clean Ink Cartridges option on the Device Services tab.
How do I clear a paper jam on the HP DeskJet 2546?expand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area as applicable. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pressing tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, then firmly push the door closed until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, never overfill the input tray, always use the same paper type and size in a single stack, and keep the paper-width guide snug against the paper.
The HP DeskJet 2546 won't print — what should I do?expand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to Paused or Offline by opening the print queue via Devices and Printers in the Control Panel. Confirm the HP DeskJet 2546 is set as the default printer. If issues persist, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue, then restart your computer. You can also download the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from hp.com for automated diagnosis.
How do I fix an ink cartridge problem on the HP DeskJet 2546?expand_more
Start by removing and reinserting the HP 65 ink cartridges to ensure they are properly seated. If the error persists, clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge using a dry, lint-free cloth or swab — wipe only the small gold-colored dots and avoid smearing ink elsewhere. Also wipe the corresponding gold-colored contact points inside the printer. Reinstall the cartridges and close the cartridge access door. If both the tri-color and black cartridge lights are blinking, remove the black cartridge and close the door — if the On button blinks quickly, the tri-color cartridge is defective; if it does not blink, the black cartridge needs replacement.
How do I resolve copy and scan issues on the HP DeskJet 2546?expand_more
For 'Unable to scan' errors on Windows, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from hp.com, which can automatically detect and resolve most common scan and copy problems. Ensure the cartridge access door is fully closed and the output tray is open before attempting to copy or scan. If you experience a general printer failure, turn the printer off and then back on — if the problem continues, contact HP support directly at hp.com/support.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the HP DeskJet 2546 off using the On button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this protects the HP 65 cartridges from drying out and keeps the printhead capped.
  • Do not remove the pink protective tape from the HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape prevents ink evaporation during storage.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk damage to the printhead.
  • When estimated ink levels show one or both HP 65 cartridges running low, order replacement cartridges promptly to avoid printing delays — you do not need to replace them until print quality becomes unacceptable.
