Which “2500” do you have? This page covers the DeskJet D2500 series (models such as the D2530 and D2545): a print-only, USB-only printer that uses HP 60 cartridges. The DeskJet 2510, 2512, 2514, 2515 and 2540 are different, newer All-in-One printers that use HP 61 cartridges — HP 60 cartridges will not fit them. If your printer has a scanner lid, it is not a D2500.

Product Setup

Unbox and Position the Printer

Remove all packaging tape and protective materials from the HP DeskJet 2500. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface near your computer with enough space to load paper and open the cartridge access door.

Connect via USB Cable

Plug the USB cable firmly from your computer directly into the HP DeskJet 2500, avoiding any USB hubs as these can cause connection issues. Ensure the connection is secure at both ends before proceeding.

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and insert the HP 60 Black cartridge into the right slot and the HP 60 Tri-color cartridge into the left slot. Press each cartridge down firmly until it clicks into place, then close the access door.

Install Software and Print a Test Page

No CD drive is needed. Connect the printer by USB and let Windows install its built-in DeskJet D2500 series driver — if the printer does not appear, run Windows Update with the printer connected. HP’s original full software came on a CD for older Windows PCs, so keep the CD only as a fallback for those systems. Then print a test page to confirm everything is working correctly.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

No WiFi on This Printer — How to Connect Instead

The HP DeskJet 2500 (D2500 series) has no wireless radio — it cannot join a WiFi network, and no setting or adapter adds WiFi to it. It connects to one computer at a time with a USB cable. This is the setup that works:

USB Direct Connection

Plug the USB cable directly from the HP DeskJet 2500 into your computer, without a USB hub — hubs can prevent the printer from being detected properly. Make sure the connection is secure at both ends.

Driver Software Setup

On Windows 10 or 11, connect the printer by USB and Windows installs its built-in DeskJet D2500 driver automatically; if the printer does not appear, run Windows Update with it connected. HP’s original full software shipped on a CD for older Windows versions — treat the CD as a fallback for those older PCs only.

Sharing with other computers: You can share this printer over your home network from the computer it is plugged into (Windows printer sharing). That computer must stay switched on for others to print — and printing is all that can be shared, because this model has no scanner.

If the problem persists, unplug the USB cable, restart the computer, reconnect the cable directly, and let Windows reinstall its built-in driver (run Windows Update if the printer still does not appear).

Check the ink levels of your HP 60 Black and HP 60 Tri-color cartridges. Note that some residual ink may remain in the cartridge even when it appears empty. If cartridges are low, replace them with genuine HP 60 or HP 60XL cartridges for best results.

Make sure you are using paper within the recommended weight range for the HP DeskJet 2500. Remove any jammed paper gently by pulling it out in the direction of the paper path, then reload the paper tray and ensure the stack is aligned properly.

What do the blinking cartridge lights on the DeskJet 2500 mean?expand_more
The two cartridge status lights sit above the cartridge slots. A solid light means that cartridge is low on ink. A blinking left light means the tri-color cartridge (left slot) needs attention, and a blinking right light means the same for the black cartridge (right slot). If both lights blink, remove and reseat one cartridge at a time to find the faulty one, and clean its copper contacts before replacing it.
How do I print a self-test page on the DeskJet 2500?expand_more
Load plain paper, then press and hold the Power button, press the Cancel (X) button once, and release Power. The printer prints an extended self-test page (the ‘Tap 10’ test). Check the stair-step patterns and color blocks: missing lines or a missing color mean clogged nozzles — run the printhead cleaning utility, then print the test again.

No — the DeskJet D2500 series is print-only and connects by USB cable only. There is no scanner, copier, or wireless radio in this model. If you need scanning and copying, you need an All-in-One instead; the similar-looking DeskJet 2510–2540 models are All-in-Ones, but note that they use HP 61 cartridges, not HP 60.
