1

Unbox and Power On

Remove all packing materials and tape from the printer, including any tape on the ink cartridge access door. Plug in the power cable and press the On button to power up the HP DeskJet 2544. Wait for the printer to complete its startup sequence before proceeding.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges from their packaging, peel off the pink protective tape, and insert each cartridge into the correct color-coded slot until it snaps firmly into place. Close the cartridge access door to begin.

3

Load Paper and Install Software

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and open the output tray before printing. Insert the printer software CD or download the latest driver from hp.com/support to install the HP DeskJet 2544 software on your computer. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the installation.

4

Align Ink Cartridges for Best Quality

After installation, align the cartridges to ensure optimal print quality. Open the printer software, click Print & Scan, then click 'Maintain Your Printer' and select 'Align Ink Cartridges' from the Device Services tab. The printer will print an alignment sheet — place it face-down on the scanner glass and press Start Copy Black to complete alignment.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

Connect the HP DeskJet 2544 to your wireless network quickly using WPS. Press and hold the Wireless button on the printer for more than 3 seconds until the wireless light blinks, then press the WPS button on your router. The printer will connect within approximately 2 minutes — the wireless light will stop blinking and remain solid once connected. Requires a WPS-enabled 2.4GHz router.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router)

Print directly from your smartphone, tablet, or laptop without a wireless router using HP Wireless Direct. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable it — on first activation, an information page will print with connection instructions and the security password. The Wireless Direct status light will remain solid when active, allowing nearby devices to connect and print wirelessly.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First, verify you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and check estimated ink levels in the printer software under Print & Scan. Align the cartridges via the printer toolbox by clicking 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab — load plain white paper and press Start Copy Black when prompted. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab, and if color or black boxes show gaps, run the automatic cartridge cleaning from the Device Services tab.
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull the jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area by hand — never use tools. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the paper, then firmly close the door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the input tray, use only one paper type and size at a time, and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the paper.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on, paper is loaded in the input tray, and the output tray is open. Check that the printer is not paused or set to offline by navigating to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and reviewing the Printer menu. Verify the HP DeskJet 2544 is set as the default printer, restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services, and clear any stuck jobs from the print queue. Reconnect the USB cable or confirm the wireless connection is active, then restart both the printer and computer. You can also download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool for automated diagnosis.
Ink Cartridge Error or Blinking Lightsexpand_more
If both the tri-color and black ink cartridge lights are blinking, first confirm the pink protective tape has been fully removed from both HP 65 cartridges and that they are properly seated. If lights continue blinking, remove the black cartridge and close the access door — a rapidly blinking On button indicates a faulty tri-color cartridge, while no blinking indicates the black cartridge needs replacement. For contact-related errors, clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth, then reinstall. Do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes to avoid printhead damage.
Wireless Connectivity Issuesexpand_more
The HP DeskJet 2544 only supports 2.4GHz wireless networks — ensure your router is broadcasting on 2.4GHz and is powered on before setup. If connected via VPN, disconnect from the VPN first as it can block access to the printer on your local network. To switch from a USB connection to wireless, open the printer software, click Printer Setup & Software, and select 'Convert a USB connected printer to wireless.' Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to automatically diagnose and resolve most networking issues, and ensure your firewall or antivirus is not blocking the printer during setup.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2544 using the On button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air increases ink evaporation.
  • If you remove a cartridge for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk permanent printhead damage.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels via Print & Scan in the printer software and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid unexpected printing delays.
