1

Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer and ink cartridges. Plug the power cord into the printer and a wall outlet, then press the On button to power on the HP DeskJet 2545. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization sequence before proceeding.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the pink protective tape from both the tri-color (HP 65) and black (HP 65) cartridges, then insert each into the correct color-coded slot and press firmly until they snap into place. Close the cartridge access door to begin.

3

Load Paper and Open Output Tray

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray, adjusting the paper-width guide so it fits snugly without bending the paper. Make sure the output tray is open before printing, as the printer will not begin a print job with the output tray closed. Do not overfill the input tray to prevent paper jams.

4

Install Software and Connect

Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the latest drivers from hp.com/support. Follow the on-screen instructions and select either a Wireless or USB connection when prompted on the Connection Options screen. Once setup is complete, align the ink cartridges through the printer toolbox for optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

Press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2545 for more than 3 seconds until the Wireless status light begins blinking, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. The printer will automatically connect to your 2.4GHz wireless network and the light will stop blinking once the connection is established. Note that the DeskJet 2545 only supports 2.4GHz networks.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router)

Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable HP Wireless Direct, which allows smartphones, tablets, and computers to connect directly to the printer without a wireless router. When first activated, an information page is printed with connection instructions and the Wireless Direct password. The Wireless Direct status light will remain solid when the feature is active.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First ensure you are using original HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and check estimated ink levels in the printer software. Open the printer software, click Print & Scan, then click Maintain Your Printer to access the toolbox where you can align cartridges, print a diagnostics page, or run an automatic cartridge cleaning. If streaks or missing color boxes appear on the diagnostics page, use the Clean Ink Cartridges option under the Device Services tab.
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clearance first. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper out from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area by hand — never use tools. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing both side tabs, remove the jammed paper, then close the door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. Prevent future jams by not overfilling the tray and using only one paper type and size at a time.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to Paused or Use Printer Offline by going to Devices and Printers in the Windows Control Panel, right-clicking the HP DeskJet 2545 icon, and checking the Printer menu. Confirm the DeskJet 2545 is set as the default printer, restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services, and clear the print queue if documents are stuck. Restart your computer if issues persist, or download the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility for automated diagnosis.
Ink Cartridge Error or Blinking Lightsexpand_more
If both the tri-color and black cartridge lights are blinking, first confirm the pink protective tape has been fully removed from both HP 65 cartridges and that both are properly seated. If lights continue blinking, remove the black cartridge and close the access door — a quickly blinking On button light indicates a faulty tri-color cartridge, while no blinking indicates a faulty black cartridge. For contact-related errors, clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth, then reinstall. Do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes to prevent printhead damage.
Wireless Connectivity Issuesexpand_more
Ensure your wireless router is powered on and broadcasting on a 2.4GHz network, as the HP DeskJet 2545 does not support 5GHz connections. If connected via VPN, disconnect from the VPN before attempting to reach the printer on your local network. To switch from a USB to wireless connection, open the HP DeskJet 2540 series software, click Printer Setup & Software, and select 'Convert a USB connected printer to wireless.' Use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool to automatically diagnose and resolve common wireless printing problems.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2545 using the On button and wait for the On button light to go out before unplugging — this prevents HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape slows ink evaporation and preserves cartridge life.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk printhead damage.
  • Regularly align the ink cartridges using the Align Ink Cartridges option in the printer toolbox (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer) to ensure the best possible print quality from your DeskJet 2545.
