1

Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including any tape covering the cartridge access area. Plug the power cord into the printer and a wall outlet, then press the On button and wait for the printer to fully initialize before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges from their packaging, peel off the pink protective tape, and insert each cartridge into the correct color-coded slot until it snaps firmly into place.

3

Load Paper and Open Output Tray

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and adjust the paper-width guide so it fits snugly against the paper without bending it. Make sure the output tray is open, as the printer cannot begin printing unless the output tray is fully extended.

4

Install Software and Connect

Insert the printer software CD or download the latest driver from hp.com/support to install the HP DeskJet 2543 software on your computer. During installation, select your preferred connection type — wireless or USB — and follow the on-screen instructions to complete setup and align the ink cartridges for optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

Press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2543 for more than 3 seconds until the wireless light begins blinking, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes to establish the connection automatically. This method requires a WPS-enabled wireless router and works on 2.4GHz networks (802.11b/g/n). No software or PIN entry is needed for this quick setup method.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router)

HP Wireless Direct lets you connect smartphones, tablets, or laptops directly to the HP DeskJet 2543 without needing a wireless router or access point. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable this mode — on first activation, an information page will print with connection details and the default password. Security is enabled by default to protect your direct wireless connection.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and check estimated ink levels in the printer software under Print & Scan. If levels are acceptable, align the cartridges by loading plain white paper, opening the HP printer toolbox via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and clicking 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab — place the printed alignment sheet face-down on the scanner glass and press Start Copy Black. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab and, if color or black boxes show missing sections, run 'Clean Ink Cartridges' from the Device Services tab.
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If the jam remains, gently pull the paper free from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area without using tools. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper carefully, then close the door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, avoid overfilling the input tray, do not mix paper sizes or types, and ensure paper lays flat with the width guide properly adjusted.
Printer Not Printingexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for any error messages in the printer software and resolve them. If using a USB cable, disconnect and reconnect it; if using wireless, verify the connection is active. Open Devices and Printers in Windows Control Panel to confirm the HP DeskJet 2543 is set as the default printer and is not paused or set to offline mode. If the issue continues, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue, and restart your computer. You can also download the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool from hp.com for automated diagnosis.
Ink Cartridge Error or Blinking Lightsexpand_more
If both the tri-color and black cartridge lights are blinking, first check that the pink protective tape has been removed from both HP 65 cartridges and that they are fully seated in their slots. If lights continue blinking, try removing and reinserting each cartridge. If an error persists, clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth — do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes to avoid printhead damage. To identify a defective cartridge, remove the black cartridge and close the access door: if the On button blinks rapidly, replace the tri-color cartridge; if it does not blink, replace the black cartridge.
Unable to Scan or Copyexpand_more
For scan or copy issues on Windows, download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility from hp.com/support — it can automatically detect and resolve most common scanning problems with the HP DeskJet 2543. Make sure the printer is connected to the computer either via USB or an active wireless network before scanning. Confirm the scanner glass is clean and that the document is placed face-down on the right front corner of the glass. If problems persist, visit hp.com/support for additional online troubleshooting guidance specific to copy and scan issues.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2543 using the On button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this parks the cartridges properly and prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air causes ink to evaporate and can reduce cartridge yield.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk permanent printhead damage.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels via Print & Scan in the printer software and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid unexpected print delays when levels run low.
