Unbox and Power On

Remove the HP DeskJet 2542 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface. Connect the power cord and press the On button to power on the printer. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization sequence before proceeding.

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the pink protective tape from both the HP 61 tri-color and black ink cartridges, then insert them into the correct color-coded slots until they snap firmly into place. Close the cartridge access door to begin.

Load Paper and Open Output Tray

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and adjust the paper-width guide so it fits snugly against the paper without bending it. Make sure the output tray is open before printing, as the printer will not begin printing until the output tray is fully extended.

Install Software and Connect

Insert the printer software CD or download the latest drivers from hp.com and follow the on-screen instructions. When prompted on the Connection Options screen, select either Wireless or USB to complete the connection. Once connected, print an alignment page to ensure optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

WPS Push Button Setup

Press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2542 for more than 3 seconds until the wireless status light begins blinking, then press the WPS button on your router within 2 minutes. The printer will automatically connect to your 2.4GHz wireless network and the wireless light will stop blinking and remain solid once the connection is established.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router)

HP Wireless Direct allows smartphones, tablets, and computers to connect directly to the HP DeskJet 2542 without a wireless router. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable it — on first use, an information page with connection instructions and the password will print automatically. The Wireless Direct status light will remain solid when active.

Ensure you are using genuine HP 61 or HP 61XL ink cartridges and that they are not low on ink. Open the printer software, go to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and use the Device Services tab to run 'Align Ink Cartridges' — load plain white paper and place the printed alignment sheet face-down on the scanner glass, then press Start Copy Black. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab and, if color or black boxes show missing sections, run the 'Clean Ink Cartridges' function from the Device Services tab.

First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area by hand — never use tools. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, then firmly close the door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the input tray, always use the same paper type and size in a single load, and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the paper.

Verify the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to Paused or Use Printer Offline by navigating to Devices and Printers in Control Panel and reviewing the Printer menu. Confirm the HP DeskJet 2542 is set as the default printer (it will show a check mark in a black or green circle). Restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue, and restart your computer if needed. If both the tri-color and black cartridge indicator lights are blinking, first confirm that the pink protective tape has been fully removed from both HP 61 cartridges and that both are properly seated. If lights continue blinking, one cartridge may be defective — remove the black cartridge, close the access door, and observe the On button: rapid blinking indicates a faulty tri-color cartridge, no blinking indicates the black cartridge needs replacement. For an 'Ink Cartridge Problem' error, remove and reinsert the cartridge, then clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes.

The HP DeskJet 2542 only supports 2.4GHz wireless networks — ensure your router is broadcasting on 2.4GHz and that you have the correct network name (SSID) and WPA passphrase or WEP key. If connected via VPN, disconnect from the VPN before attempting to reach the printer on your local network. To switch from a USB connection to wireless, open the HP DeskJet 2540 series software, click Printer Setup & Software, and select 'Convert a USB connected printer to wireless.' Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the HP DeskJet 2542 off using the On button and wait for the On button light to go out before unplugging — this prevents HP 61 cartridges from drying out prematurely.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 61 or HP 61XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation and can damage the printhead.
  • If you remove a cartridge for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk permanent printhead damage.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels in the printer software under Print & Scan and replace HP 61 cartridges before print quality degrades significantly to avoid printing delays.
