Unbox and Power On

Remove all packing materials and tape from the printer, including any tape covering the cartridge access area. Place the printer on a flat surface, connect the power cord, and press the On button to power up the HP DeskJet 2548. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization sequence before proceeding.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Install the HP 65 or HP 65XL black and tri-color ink cartridges into their corresponding slots, matching the color and icon for each slot. Press each cartridge firmly until it snaps into place, then close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Open Output Tray

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and adjust the paper-width guide so it fits snugly against the paper without bending it. Make sure the output tray is open before printing, as the printer will not begin a job unless the output tray is extended. Avoid overfilling the input tray to prevent paper jams.

4

Install Software and Connect

Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the latest drivers from hp.com/support, then follow the on-screen instructions to install the HP DeskJet 2548 software. When prompted, choose either a Wireless or USB connection type on the Connection Options screen. After setup is complete, print an alignment page to ensure the best possible print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

router

WPS Push Button Setup

If your router has a WPS push button, press and hold the Wireless button on the HP DeskJet 2548 for more than 3 seconds until the Wireless status light begins blinking, then press the WPS button on your router. The printer will automatically connect to your 2.4GHz wireless network within approximately two minutes. Once connected, the wireless light stops blinking and remains solid.

HP Wireless Direct (No Router)

HP Wireless Direct lets you print from smartphones, tablets, or laptops directly to the HP DeskJet 2548 without needing a wireless router or access point. Press the Wireless Direct button on the printer control panel to enable the feature — on first activation, an information page with connection details and the security password will print automatically. This mode is ideal for guest printing or locations without a traditional network.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
Start by confirming you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and that the correct paper type and print quality are selected in the printer software under Print & Scan > Set Preferences. Open the printer toolbox via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer and use the 'Align Ink Cartridges' option on the Device Services tab — load a plain white sheet, and the printer will print and scan an alignment page automatically. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab and, if color or black boxes show missing areas, run 'Clean Ink Cartridges' from the Device Services tab.
Paper Jamexpand_more
First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If the jam remains, gently pull the paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area depending on where it is stuck. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper carefully, then close the cleanout door until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the input tray, always use the same paper type and size per load, and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the paper.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray, then check for any error messages in the printer software and follow on-screen instructions to resolve them. Verify the printer is not paused or set to offline by going to Devices and Printers in the Windows Control Panel, right-clicking the HP DeskJet 2548 icon, and checking the Printer menu. Confirm the printer is set as the default device, restart the Print Spooler service via Windows Administrative Tools > Services, and clear the print queue if stalled jobs are present. If issues continue, restart your computer or download the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility for automated diagnosis.
Ink Cartridge Problem or Blinking Cartridge Lightexpand_more
If the cartridge indicator lights are blinking, first check that the pink protective tape has been fully removed from both the HP 65 black and tri-color cartridges and that both are firmly seated. If lights continue to blink, remove and reinsert each cartridge; if the problem persists, clean the gold electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth — do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes to avoid printhead damage. To identify a defective cartridge, remove the black cartridge and close the door: a rapidly blinking On button light indicates the tri-color cartridge needs replacing, while no blinking points to the black cartridge.
Wireless Connection or Networking Issuesexpand_more
Ensure your wireless router is powered on and broadcasting on the 2.4GHz band, as the HP DeskJet 2548 does not support 5GHz connections. If you are connected to a VPN, disconnect from it before attempting to reach the printer on your local network. To switch from a USB connection to wireless, open the HP software, click Printer Setup & Software, and select 'Convert a USB connected printer to wireless,' following the on-screen steps. For persistent issues, use the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool or visit hp.com/support to access network security settings guidance and additional troubleshooting resources.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2548 using the On button and wait for the On button light to go out before unplugging — this parks the cartridges properly and prevents the HP 65 / HP 65XL cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation and can reduce cartridge life.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left unprotected outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk permanent printhead damage.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels via the printer software and keep a spare HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand; replace cartridges promptly when levels are low to avoid print quality degradation or printing delays.
