Install Cartridges

Wi-Fi Direct (No Router Required)

Press the Wi-Fi Direct button on the control panel to turn it on. When the light is solid, search for your printer's Wi-Fi Direct name from your mobile device or computer and enter the Wi-Fi Direct password. Perfect for direct printing without accessing your home network router.

Paper Jam or Feed Issuesexpand_more
Press the Cancel button to attempt automatic clearing. If the jam persists, manually pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area. For carriage jams, open the cartridge access door and slide the carriage to the right to remove obstructions. Always load paper with short edges down and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending paper.
Cartridge or Ink Errorsexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on, verify cartridges are installed correctly and plastic tape is completely removed. Remove each cartridge, clean the gold electrical contacts with a dry lint-free cloth, and reinstall firmly until clicking into place. Check Ink Level icons on the display—if both icons blink with no segments, both cartridges may be missing, improperly installed, or incompatible. Try single cartridge mode as a temporary solution.
Printing Quality Issues or Print Quality Errorsexpand_more
Verify you are using original HP cartridges and check estimated ink levels—low ink reduces quality. Load high-quality HP paper with the ColorLok logo for best results. From the printer software, click Maintain Your Printer and select Align Cartridges, then print a diagnostic page. If streaks or missing colors appear, run the Clean Cartridges utility. Always use flat paper and store photo paper in original packaging within a sealed bag.
Wireless Connection Problemsexpand_more
If the Wireless light blinks with the Wireless Attention icon on, there is no wireless signal. Verify your router is powered on and move the printer closer to the access point. For connection failures, press the Wireless button and Information button together to print a wireless test report. Check your network name (SSID) and password using the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility. If Wi-Fi Direct fails to connect, ensure the light is on and try connecting from your device again.
Printer Not Printing (Unable to Print)expand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on with paper loaded. Check that the printer is not paused or offline by opening your system's printer queue. Verify the correct printer is set as default. Restart the print spooler service from Administrative Tools > Services. If using USB, disconnect and reconnect the cable. Run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility for automatic diagnosis. Clear the print queue and restart your computer if issues persist. Contact HP Support if the problem continues.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Check estimated ink levels regularly from the control panel Ink Level icons or printer software Estimated Levels tab. Replace cartridges when print quality becomes unacceptable, not just at low-ink warnings.
  • Always turn off the printer using the Power button and wait for the light to go out to protect cartridges from drying. Do not leave cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes.
  • Clean cartridge contacts with a dry lint-free cloth if you experience ink errors. Never use tools or force when removing jammed paper inside the printer.
  • Enable Sleep Mode (automatic after 5 minutes) and Quiet Mode for reduced energy consumption and noise. Configure Auto-Off to turn the printer off completely after 2 hours of inactivity when not using wireless or network connections.
  • Use HP paper with the ColorLok logo and store specialty photo paper in sealed bags on flat surfaces in cool, dry locations. Align cartridges and print diagnostic pages monthly to maintain optimal print quality.
