Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the power connection port on the rear of the printer and plug it into a functioning outlet. Press the Power button to turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 63 tri-color and black cartridges from their packaging, pull off the plastic tape using the pull tab, then slide each cartridge into its matching color-coded slot at a slight upward angle until it clicks into place. Close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and input tray extender. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and the print side facing up, then slide the stack down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper, then pull out the output tray and output tray extender and lift the paper catch.

4

Install Software and Connect

Download and install the HP printer software for your operating system. On Windows, open the software by clicking Start, selecting All Apps, clicking HP, and selecting your printer. Follow the on-screen prompts to connect the printer to your wireless network and complete the setup, including cartridge alignment.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
Press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray or output tray. For jams in the cartridge access area, turn the printer off, open the cartridge access door, slide the print carriage to the right, and carefully remove the jammed paper. Close the door, power the printer back on, and press the Resume button to continue. The control panel will show error code E4 with the Resume light blinking during a jam.
Cartridge Error or Ink Alert Light Onexpand_more
If the Ink Alert light is on, check whether one or both Ink Level icons on the display are blinking with no segment. First, remove the cartridge indicated and verify that all plastic protective tape has been removed. Reinsert the cartridge firmly until it clicks. If the problem persists, clean the electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding gold-colored contacts inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth. Replace the cartridge if cleaning does not resolve the issue. Use only genuine HP 63 or HP 63XL cartridges.
Printer Not Printing (Windows)expand_more
First, confirm the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check that the printer is not set to Paused or Use Printer Offline via Control Panel > Devices and Printers. Verify the HP DeskJet 3700 is set as the default printer. If issues persist, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, and clear the print queue. Reconnect the USB or wireless connection and restart the computer if necessary. The HP Print and Scan Doctor utility can also diagnose and fix print issues automatically.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Faded Outputexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP 63 or HP 63XL cartridges and that paper is flat and appropriate for the job type. Check estimated ink levels from the printer software — replace cartridges if low. Run a cartridge alignment from the printer software via Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Cartridges. Print a diagnostic page to check color and black boxes; if streaks appear, clean the cartridges using the Clean Cartridges option in the Device Services tab. On macOS, use HP Utility > Clean Printheads, but avoid unnecessary cleaning as it wastes ink.
Wireless Connection Issuesexpand_more
If the Wireless light is blinking and the Wireless Attention icon is on, the printer cannot detect the network — ensure your router is powered on and move the printer closer to it. If both the Wireless icon and Wireless Attention icon are blinking, there may be a connection error or WPS overlap. Press the Wireless button and Information button simultaneously to print a wireless test report with diagnostic details. To re-run WPS setup, press the Wireless button to initiate pairing mode. The Wireless light will blink during connection and remain solid once connected.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the Power light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 63 cartridges from drying out by capping the printheads properly.
  • Check estimated ink levels regularly via the control panel display icons or the HP printer software, and keep a replacement HP 63 or HP 63XL cartridge on hand to avoid printing delays.
  • Do not leave cartridges outside the printer for more than 30 minutes — unprotected cartridges begin to dry out and can cause printhead damage.
  • Align the cartridges after every replacement by loading plain white letter or A4 paper and using the Align Cartridges option in the HP printer software under Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer to ensure optimal print quality.
