1

Unpack and Connect Power

Remove the HP DeskJet 3745 from its packaging and carefully remove all protective tape and materials. Connect the power cord directly to an electrical outlet and press the Power button to turn on the printer.

2

Install Print Cartridges

Open the printer cover and locate the cartridge slots. Insert the HP 65 or HP 65XL black and tri-color cartridges, pushing firmly until they click into place. Remove the protective plastic tape from each cartridge before installing.

3

Load Paper and Align Cartridges

Insert plain white paper into the input tray and slide the paper guide firmly against the edge. The printer will automatically begin a cartridge alignment process. Allow this to complete before attempting your first print.

4

Print a Test Page

Send a test document to the printer to verify everything is working correctly. Check that the paper feeds properly, the colors print clearly, and there are no error messages displayed on your computer.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Connection

Connect the printer directly to your computer using a USB cable. Attach the cable to a USB port on your computer rather than a USB hub to avoid printing conflicts and ensure reliable communication.

Printer Configuration

Once connected, install the HP printer driver from the included software or download it from hp.com/support. This enables full functionality and access to advanced printing options on your DeskJet 3745.

Printer is Not Printingexpand_more
  • Verify the printer is connected to power and turned on
  • Check that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and computer
  • Ensure print cartridges are correctly installed and have not run out of ink
  • Verify paper is properly loaded in the tray with the guide firmly against the edge
  • Close the printer cover and ensure the rear access door is attached
  • If using a USB hub, try connecting the cable directly to your computer
  • Check the Power light — if flashing, there may be an error condition
Paper Jam or Paper Feed Issuesexpand_more
  • Remove all paper from the paper tray
  • Open the rear access door by pressing the handle to the right and pulling it out
  • Carefully remove any jammed paper from the back of the printer
  • Reattach the rear access door securely
  • Reload paper, pushing it forward until you feel resistance
  • Slide the paper guide firmly against the edge of the paper stack
  • Reprint your document to verify the jam is cleared
  • If printing labels, check that no labels became detached from the sheet
Poor Print Quality or Missing Linesexpand_more
  • Check ink levels in both the black and tri-color cartridges
  • Verify that protective plastic tape has been removed from new cartridges
  • Ensure both a black cartridge and a tri-color cartridge are installed for optimal quality
  • If print appears faded, the cartridges may need cleaning — consult your printer driver
  • Select a higher print quality setting in your application
  • If blank pages print, cartridges may be out of ink — replace as needed
  • Run a cleaning cycle through your printer driver utility if available
Power Light Flashing or Printer Not Respondingexpand_more
  • A flashing Power light indicates an error condition such as a paper jam, open cover, or cartridge problem
  • Close the printer cover completely
  • Verify the rear access door is properly attached
  • Check for paper jams and remove any jammed paper
  • Remove and reinsert print cartridges to ensure they are properly seated
  • If the printer will not turn on, disconnect the power cord for 10 seconds, then reconnect and press Power
  • Try plugging directly into a wall outlet rather than a surge protector
  • If an error message appears on your computer, read it carefully for specific guidance
Slow Printing Speedexpand_more
  • Close unnecessary software applications to free up computer resources
  • Select a lower print quality setting — Best or Maximum dpi will slow printing
  • Complex documents with graphics or photos naturally print slower than text
  • Verify your printer driver is up to date by visiting hp.com/support
  • The printer may be in ink-backup mode — install both a black and tri-color cartridge for faster speed
  • Ensure your computer meets minimum system requirements with sufficient RAM and hard drive space
  • Delete unneeded files from your hard drive to free up space
