1

Install SETUP Cartridges

During initial setup, you must install the cartridges labeled SETUP that shipped with your printer. These cartridges calibrate the device before your first print job. Do not open or uncap cartridges until ready to install.

2

Load Paper into Input Tray

Ensure the paper tray is open before printing. Load letter or A4 size white paper into the input tray and adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against the paper stack. Do not overfill the tray.

3

Align Cartridges for Quality Output

Open the Printer Software, click Print and Scan, then Maintain Your Printer. Select Align Printheads on the Device Services tab. Load the printed alignment sheet with print side down on the glass scanner, then follow onscreen instructions to complete alignment.

4

Install Printer Software

Connect the USB cable and install the HP DeskJet 3524 printer software from the included CD or download from HP's website. This software provides access to Print and Scan utilities, maintenance tools, and supply ordering.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Wireless Not Available on 3524

The HP DeskJet 3524 connects exclusively via USB 2.0 cable. Use a cable of 3 meters (10 feet) or less to minimize noise interference. For wireless printing, consider upgrading to the DeskJet 3510, 3511, 3512, or 3515 models.

USB Connection Setup

Connect the printer to your computer using the provided USB cable. Ensure the connection is secure before installing software. The printer will appear in your Devices and Printers folder once drivers are installed.

Print Quality is Poor or Streakyexpand_more
First, verify you're using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Check ink levels from the control panel (home screen > Ink Levels) and replace low cartridges. In Printer Software, select Print and Scan > Set Preferences to verify correct paper type and print quality settings. Print a diagnostics page (Maintain Your Printer > Print Diagnostic Information tab) and review the color and black boxes. If you see streaks or missing portions, automatically clean the printheads (Maintain Your Printer > Clean Printheads on Device Services tab) and follow onscreen instructions.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Check that the printer is turned on and paper is loaded in the tray. Verify the USB cable is securely connected to both printer and computer. From Devices and Printers, double-click your HP DeskJet 3524 to open the print queue and confirm 'Pause Printing' and 'Use Printer Offline' are unchecked. Set the printer as default (right-click printer icon > Set as Default Printer). Restart the print spooler service through Services (Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Print Spooler). If issues persist, clear the print queue (Printer menu > Cancel All Documents > Yes) and restart your computer.
Paper Jamexpand_more
If you see a paper jam message, first try to pull out jammed paper from the exterior. If paper is not visible, open the cartridge access door and check that area—do not touch the white encoder strip on the carriage. For jams toward the back, open the cleanout door and remove the paper, then gently push the door closed until latches snap. If paper still cannot be reached, remove all paper from the tray, rotate the printer on its left side, slide out the paper tray, remove the jammed paper, and reassemble. Press OK on the control panel to continue. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the tray, remove printed pages frequently, ensure paper lays flat, do not mix paper sizes or types, and adjust the paper-width guide snugly.
Cartridge Not Recognized or Error Messageexpand_more
First, remove and reinsert the cartridge to reseat it properly. If the error persists, clean the cartridge contacts: Open the cartridge access door, wait for the carriage to move right, remove the indicated cartridge, and hold it upside down. Wipe only the four small copper or gold-colored contact rectangles on the bottom with a dry lint-free cloth. Wipe the matching four pins in the printhead inside the printer using a dry swab. Reinstall the cartridge and close the access door. If the error continues, turn the printer off and back on. Verify you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges—older generation cartridges require a newer version. Ensure SETUP cartridges were used during initial setup, not regular cartridges.
Printer Will Not Turn On or Printhead Failureexpand_more
If the printer does not respond to the power button, check that the power cable is securely connected and the outlet is working. If you receive a "Printer failure" or "Printhead failure" error message after turning the printer off and back on, contact HP Support for assistance. Phone support is available for one year in North America, Asia Pacific, and Latin America.
