1

Install Setup Cartridges

When first setting up your HP DeskJet 3522, you must install the SETUP cartridges that shipped with the printer. These cartridges calibrate your printer before the first print job. Do not open or uncap cartridges until ready to install them.

2

Load Paper and Open Tray

Insert plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray. The paper tray must be open to begin printing. Ensure paper is loaded flat with no bent or torn edges, and adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against the paper.

3

Align Print Cartridges

After cartridge installation, align the cartridges by accessing the Printer Software, clicking Print and Scan, then Maintain Your Printer. Select Align Printheads on the Device Services tab and follow onscreen instructions. Aligning ensures high-quality output.

4

Configure Print Preferences

In the Printer Software, click Print and Scan, then Set Preferences to access print properties. Select the appropriate paper type and print quality from the Media drop-down list to optimize results for your specific media.

USB Connection Setup

Connect your DeskJet 3522 to your computer using a standard USB cable. Ensure the printer is turned on before connecting. If you experience connection issues, try disconnecting and reconnecting the USB cable as a troubleshooting step.

Unable to Printexpand_more
First ensure the printer is turned on and paper is loaded in the tray. Check for error messages and resolve them. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Verify the product is not paused or offline by checking Devices and Printers. Confirm the product is set as the default printer. Restart the print spooler service. Restart your computer if needed. Clear the print queue via the Printer menu by selecting Cancel All Documents or Purge Print Document. Download the HP Printing Diagnostic Utility for automated troubleshooting.
Poor Print Qualityexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP cartridges. Check print properties to select the appropriate paper type and print quality. Check estimated ink levels—if cartridges are low, replace them. Align the printer cartridges by accessing Maintain Your Printer in the Printer Software and selecting Align Printheads. Load an alignment sheet print side down on the right front corner of the glass and follow instructions. Print a diagnostics page to check for streaks or missing ink portions in color and black boxes.
Paper Jamexpand_more
If paper is visible from the exterior, pull it out and press OK. If not visible, open the cartridge access door carefully—do not touch the white encoder strip. For jams in the cartridge access area, pull out the paper gently. For jams toward the back, open the cleanout door, remove the paper, and close the door until both latches snap. If paper cannot be reached, remove all paper from the tray, rotate the printer onto its left side, slide out the paper tray, remove the jammed paper, slide the tray back, and rotate the printer upright. Prevent jams by not overfilling the tray, removing printed pages frequently, keeping paper flat, using only one paper type/size at a time, and adjusting the paper-width guide snugly.
Ink Cartridge Problemexpand_more
First try removing and reinserting the cartridges. If problems persist, clean the cartridge contacts. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the right. Press the tab on the indicated cartridge and remove it. Locate the electrical contacts (four small copper or gold rectangles on the cartridge bottom) and wipe them with a dry swab or lint-free cloth. Inside the product, locate and wipe the matching contacts on the printhead using a dry swab. Reinstall the cartridge, close the door, and check if the error is resolved. If the error persists, turn the product off and on again. For supply upgrade problems, remove the upgrade cartridge, insert the original, close the door until the carriage stops, then reinsert the upgrade cartridge and close the door again.
Clean Printheadsexpand_more
If the diagnostics page shows streaks or missing portions in color and black boxes, clean the printhead automatically. From the control panel home screen, select Settings, then Tools, then Clean Printhead, and follow onscreen instructions. Alternatively, in the Printer Software, click Print and Scan, then Maintain Your Printer, and select Clean Printheads on the Device Services tab. This process requires plain white letter or A4 paper loaded in the input tray. Load the paper first, then start the cleaning cycle.
