Remove all protective materials and packaging from your HP DeskJet 3055a. Place the printer on a flat, stable surface near a power outlet and your computer. Ensure adequate ventilation around the device.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Insert the HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges (color and black) into their designated slots until they click into place. Close the access door.

3

Load Paper and Connect

Fill the input tray with letter or A4 plain white paper and adjust the paper-width guide. Connect the printer to your computer using a USB cable (3 meters or less recommended to minimize noise interference).

4

Align Cartridges

Install the printer software from the included CD or HP's website. Open the Printer Software, select Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks, then click 'Align Ink Cartridges'. The printer will print an alignment sheet—place it print-side down on the scanner glass and follow the on-screen instructions.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First, ensure you're using genuine HP cartridges. Check print properties in the Printer Software (Printer Actions > Set Preferences) to verify correct paper type and quality settings. Check estimated ink levels—if cartridges are low, replace them. Next, print a diagnostics page (Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Print Diagnostic Information). If you see streaks or missing portions in the color and black boxes, automatically clean the cartridges using the Clean Ink Cartridges option on the Device Services tab. Allow the cleaning process to complete, then print a test page.
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button to attempt automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, manually locate and remove the jammed paper. Check the input tray—gently pull paper out if jammed near the back. Check the output tray—if jammed near the front, gently remove the paper or open the carriage door and slide the print carriage right to access. For internal jams, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pressing tabs on both sides, remove jammed paper carefully, and close the door until both latches snap. Press OK on the control panel to continue. Prevent future jams by not overfilling trays, removing printed papers frequently, and ensuring paper is flat with no bent or torn edges.
Unable to Printexpand_more
Check for error messages on the control panel and resolve them. Disconnect and reconnect your USB cable (or confirm wireless connection if applicable). Verify the printer is not paused or offline: open Devices and Printers (Windows 7) or Control Panel > Printers (Vista/XP), check the print queue, and ensure no check marks appear next to 'Pause Printing' or 'Use Printer Offline'. Confirm the 3055a is set as your default printer—it should have a check mark in a black or green circle. Restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services. Clear the print queue by right-clicking your printer and selecting 'Cancel all documents'. If issues persist, restart your computer. The HP Printing Diagnostic Utility is available for Windows (32-bit and 64-bit) to automatically troubleshoot print failures.
Ink Cartridge Not Recognized or Errorexpand_more
Try removing and reinserting the cartridges to reseat them properly. If the error persists, clean the cartridge contacts. Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to center. Remove the cartridge indicated in the error message. Hold it by its sides with the bottom pointing up and locate the four copper or gold-colored electrical contacts. Wipe only the contacts with a dry, lint-free cloth—do not touch other parts of the cartridge. On the inside of the printer, locate the four gold or copper pins in the printhead and wipe them clean with a dry swab. Reinstall the cartridge and close the access door. If the error message persists, turn the printer off and on again. Note: Do not leave cartridges outside the printer longer than 30 minutes, as this can damage both the printhead and cartridges.
Cartridge Alignment Issuesexpand_more
The HP DeskJet 3055a automatically prompts you to align cartridges when you install a new one. If you remove and reinstall the same cartridge, the printer remembers the alignment values and will not re-prompt. To manually align, load letter or A4 unused plain white paper into the input tray. Open the Printer Software and select Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Align Ink Cartridges on the Device Services tab. The printer will produce an alignment sheet—place it print-side down on the right front corner of the scanner glass and follow the on-screen instructions. This ensures high-quality output and should be performed after every new cartridge installation.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Check estimated ink levels regularly via the control panel (Setup > Ink Status) or Printer Software to plan cartridge replacements before they run dry
  • Use only genuine HP 65 and HP 65XL cartridges for optimal print quality and printer performance; third-party cartridges may cause compatibility issues
  • Align cartridges after every new cartridge installation by accessing Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Align Ink Cartridges
  • Print a diagnostics page monthly (Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Print Diagnostic Information) and run automatic cartridge cleaning if streaks or missing color appears
  • Load paper correctly—ensure it lays flat, is not bent or torn, and do not overfill the input tray; adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against all paper
