1

Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from inside and outside the printer. Connect the power cord and press the Power button to turn on the HP DeskJet 2800e. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization sequence before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Insert the included HP 67 black and tri-color ink cartridges into their respective slots, pushing firmly until each clicks into place. Always use the cartridges included with the printer for initial setup to ensure proper priming.

3

Connect to Wi-Fi

Visit 123.hp.com on your computer or mobile device and download the HP Smart app to begin wireless setup. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your device and that you are not connected to a VPN or remote work network during setup, as this can prevent the software from finding your printer. If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it temporarily to complete the Wi-Fi setup.

4

Load Paper and Print a Test Page

Load plain white paper into the input tray, adjusting the guides to fit snugly against the paper stack. Follow the on-screen prompts in the HP Smart app to print an alignment page, which ensures optimal print quality. Once complete, your HP DeskJet 2800e is ready to print, copy, and scan.

Wi-Fi Direct (Device-to-Printer)

Wi-Fi Direct allows you to connect a smartphone, tablet, or laptop directly to the HP DeskJet 2800e without needing a router. Press the Wireless button on the printer to check Wi-Fi Direct status and signal strength via the HP Smart app. This is ideal for printing when your home network is unavailable or when guests need temporary print access.

Wireless Light is Blinking — Printer Won't Connect to Wi-Fiexpand_more
A blinking Wireless light indicates the DeskJet 2800e is not connected to your Wi-Fi network. First, confirm that Wi-Fi is enabled on your computer or mobile device and that you are not using a VPN or remote work network. Disconnect any Ethernet cables from the printer, move the device closer to your router if signal strength is weak, and restart the HP Smart setup process from 123.hp.com.
Error E0 — Unusable Cartridge Detectedexpand_more
The E0 error code means the printer has detected an unusable or incompatible ink cartridge. Open the HP Smart app or HP printer software on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to identify and replace the problematic cartridge. Ensure you are using a genuine HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridge, as third-party or refilled cartridges may trigger this error on the 2800e.
Error E3 — Carriage Stall or Paper Jam in Cartridge Areaexpand_more
Error E3 indicates a carriage stall, meaning the ink cartridge carriage cannot move freely inside the printer. Turn off the printer and unplug it, then open the cartridge access door and carefully remove any jammed paper or debris blocking the carriage path. Make sure nothing is obstructing the carriage rails before closing the door and restarting the printer.
Low Ink Warning Appearing on Screenexpand_more
When the DeskJet 2800e detects low ink, an alert will appear in the HP Smart app or on your connected device. You can continue printing until ink runs out, but it is recommended to have a replacement HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridge on hand to avoid interruptions. Consider enrolling in HP Instant Ink for automatic cartridge delivery before you run out.
Printer Not Found During Setup on Computerexpand_more
If the HP Smart app cannot locate your DeskJet 2800e during setup, first confirm both your computer and printer are on the same Wi-Fi network. Disable any active VPN or corporate network connections, as these can block printer discovery. Temporarily disconnecting any Ethernet cables and restarting both your router and printer before retrying setup often resolves this issue.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Run the printhead cleaning tool via the HP Smart app if you notice streaks or faded colors on your DeskJet 2800e prints — avoid running it excessively, as it consumes ink.
  • Replace HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges promptly when the low ink alert appears to prevent the printhead from drying out due to empty cartridges.
  • Clean the scanner glass with a soft, lint-free cloth periodically to ensure sharp, accurate copies and scans from the flatbed surface.
  • Keep the input and output trays free of dust and debris, and store paper in a dry environment to prevent misfeeds and paper jams in the DeskJet 2800e.
