1

Unbox and Connect Power

Remove all packing materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the rear power connection port and plug it into a functioning power outlet. Press the Power button to turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.

2

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black ink cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape, and insert each into the correct color-coded slot until they snap into place. Close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Install Software

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide left, and insert a stack of plain white paper print-side up until it stops. Slide the guide snugly against the paper edge, then lower the output tray and pull out the tray extender. Insert the software CD or download the HP printer software and follow on-screen instructions.

4

Connect via USB and Align Cartridges

When prompted during software installation, connect the USB cable from your computer to the rear USB 2.0 port on the printer — HP recommends a cable no longer than 3 m (10 feet). Once installation is complete, open the HP printer software, navigate to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and run the Align Ink Cartridges tool for best print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Cable Connection

The HP DeskJet 2130 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. During software installation, select 'USB' on the Connection Options screen when prompted. HP recommends using a cable of 3 m (10 feet) or less for best performance. This is the only supported connection method for this model.

Wireless — Not Supported

The HP DeskJet 2130 does not include wireless or Wi-Fi capability. It is a USB-only printer and cannot connect to a network, Wi-Fi router, or mobile devices directly. If wireless printing is required, consider upgrading to an HP DeskJet model that supports Wi-Fi, such as those in the 3700 or 4100 series.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic clear. If that fails, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area depending on where the jam occurred. For internal jams, turn the printer off, flip it over, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, close the door until both latches snap, and power the printer back on. Never use tools to remove jammed paper.
Ink Alert Light Is On or Blinkingexpand_more
A steady Ink Alert light typically means a cartridge is missing, improperly installed, or low on ink. A blinking Ink Alert light indicates the cartridge is incompatible, damaged, or incorrectly seated. Remove the affected HP 65 cartridge, ensure all plastic tape has been removed, and firmly reinsert it into the correct slot. If the issue persists, clean the gold cartridge contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reinstall. Replace the cartridge if the problem continues.
Printer Will Not Print (Windows)expand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for on-screen error messages and resolve them. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Open 'Devices and Printers' from the Windows Start menu, right-click the HP DeskJet 2130, and confirm it is set as the Default Printer and is not paused or offline. If needed, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, then clear the print queue and restart your computer.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Faded Outputexpand_more
Confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and that ink levels are not critically low. Open the HP printer software, go to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and run 'Align Ink Cartridges' from the Device Services tab. Then print a diagnostics page using 'Print Diagnostic Information' on the Device Reports tab and inspect the color boxes. If streaks appear, run 'Clean Ink Cartridges' from the Device Services tab. Use HP-recommended paper such as HP Advanced Photo Paper for best results.
All Lights Blinking — Printer Error Stateexpand_more
If the Resume light, Power button light, and both Ink Alert lights are all blinking simultaneously, the printer may have a scanner fault or be in a critical error state. Reset the printer by turning it off, unplugging the power cord, waiting one full minute, then plugging back in and turning it on. If the Resume light blinks alongside a blinking Power light and both Ink Alert lights, there may also be a paper jam or print carriage stall — check for obstructions in the paper path and cartridge area. Contact HP support if the problem persists.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the Power button light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out by capping the printhead properly.
  • Do not open or remove the plastic tape from replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation.
  • If you remove a cartridge for any reason, reinstall it within 30 minutes — leaving cartridges unprotected outside the printer for longer can permanently damage the printhead.
  • Regularly remove printed pages from the output tray and avoid overfilling the input tray to prevent paper jams and skewed pages during print jobs.
