1

Unbox and Connect Power

Remove the HP DeskJet 2134 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface. Connect the power cord to the printer and plug it into a functioning power outlet. Press the Power button to turn the printer on and wait for it to initialize.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 (or HP 65XL) cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape, and insert each cartridge into the correct color-coded slot until it snaps securely into place. Close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Connect via USB

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide to the left, and insert a stack of plain white paper print-side up with the short edge down. Slide the guide snugly against the paper edge. Connect the included USB cable (3 m or less recommended) from the printer's rear USB 2.0 port to your computer.

4

Install Printer Software and Align Cartridges

Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the latest driver from hp.com/support. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Once installed, open the HP printer software, navigate to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and run the Align Ink Cartridges tool for optimal print quality.

USB Cable Connection

The HP DeskJet 2134 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 m (10 feet) to minimize signal interference. During software installation, select 'USB' on the Connection Options screen when prompted.

No Wireless — USB Only

The HP DeskJet 2134 does not support Wi-Fi or wireless network connectivity. All printing, copying, and scanning must be performed via a direct USB connection to a computer. To add the printer to a new computer, use the 'Connect a New Printer' option in the HP printer software Utilities menu.

Ink Alert Light Is On — Cartridge Problemexpand_more
If one Ink Alert light is on, the corresponding HP 65 cartridge may be missing, improperly installed, or still have plastic tape on it. Remove the cartridge, ensure the tape is fully removed, and reinsert it firmly until it clicks. If the light is blinking, the cartridge may be incompatible or damaged — replace it with a genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge. If both Ink Alert lights are on, both cartridges are low on ink and should be replaced when print quality declines.
Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic clearance. If the jam is in the input or output tray, gently pull the paper straight out and press Resume to continue. For jams in the cartridge access area, power off the printer, open the cartridge door, slide the carriage to the right, remove the paper, and power back on. For internal jams, turn the printer over, open the cleanout door on the bottom, remove the jammed paper, close the door until both latches snap, then turn the printer right-side up and power on.
Printer Not Printing — Unable to Printexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. On Windows, open Devices and Printers and confirm the HP DeskJet 2134 is set as the default printer and is not paused or offline. Restart the Print Spooler service via Services in Administrative Tools, then clear the print queue. If issues persist, restart both the printer and the computer.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Faded Outputexpand_more
First confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Check estimated ink levels in the HP printer software and replace low cartridges. Load plain white Letter or A4 paper and run the Align Ink Cartridges tool from the printer toolbox under Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer. Print a diagnostics page to review color and black boxes — if streaks appear, run the Clean Ink Cartridges function. Always store specialty paper flat in a sealed bag in a cool, dry location.
All Lights Blinking — Printer Error Stateexpand_more
If the Resume light, Power button light, and both Ink Alert lights are all blinking simultaneously, the printer is in a critical error state — this may indicate the scanner is not working or a general failure. Reset the printer by turning it off, unplugging the power cord, waiting one full minute, then plugging back in and turning on. If the problem persists, contact HP support. Note that the printer can still print even if the scanner is non-functional.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the HP DeskJet 2134 off using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the plastic tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as tape reduces ink evaporation during storage.
  • If you remove a cartridge for any reason, reinstall it within 30 minutes — leaving cartridges unprotected outside the printer can damage the printhead.
  • Clean the gold-colored cartridge contacts with a dry lint-free cloth if print errors persist after reinstalling cartridges, and always match each cartridge to its correct color-coded slot.
