1

Unbox and Position the Printer

Remove the HP DeskJet 2136 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface near your computer. Open the cartridge access door and remove any protective tape or packing materials from inside. Make sure the power outlet is within reach of the power cord.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Insert the HP 65 (or HP 65XL) tri-color cartridge into the left slot and the black cartridge into the right slot. Match the color and icon on each cartridge to the corresponding slot icon. Press each cartridge firmly until it snaps securely into place, then close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Connect via USB

Raise the input tray, slide the paper-width guide to the left, and insert a stack of plain white paper with the print side up and short edge down. Slide the guide snugly against the paper edge, then lower the output tray and extend the tray extender. Connect the USB 2.0 cable from the printer's rear port to your computer — but only when prompted during software installation.

4

Install HP Printer Software and Align Cartridges

Insert the printer software CD or download the latest HP DeskJet 2130 series software from hp.com, then follow the on-screen instructions to complete installation. Once installed, open the HP printer software, navigate to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, and click 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab. Place the printed alignment page on the scanner glass and scan it to finalize alignment for optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Cable Connection

The HP DeskJet 2136 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimise signal interference. Do not connect the USB cable until prompted to do so during the software installation process.

No Wireless Connectivity

The HP DeskJet 2136 does not support wireless or Wi-Fi networking. It is designed exclusively as a USB-connected printer, making it a straightforward plug-and-play device once the HP printer software is installed on your Windows or Mac computer. For network printing, consider upgrading to a wireless HP DeskJet model.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
Press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic clearance first. If the jam persists, gently pull the paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area depending on where it is stuck. For internal jams, turn off the printer, flip it over, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, then close the door and turn the printer back on. Press the Resume button to continue printing once the jam is cleared.
Ink Alert Light Is On or Blinkingexpand_more
A solid Ink Alert light means the corresponding HP 65 cartridge is low on ink or missing. A blinking Ink Alert light indicates the cartridge is incompatible, damaged, or incorrectly installed. Remove the affected cartridge, ensure all protective plastic tape has been peeled off, and firmly reinsert it into the correct slot. If both Ink Alert lights blink simultaneously, check that both cartridges are properly seated and that you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Replace cartridges when print quality becomes unacceptable.
Printer Won't Print — Unable to Printexpand_more
First confirm the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. On Windows, open Devices and Printers, right-click the HP DeskJet 2136, and ensure 'Pause Printing' and 'Use Printer Offline' are not checked. Verify the printer is set as the default printer. Restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services, and clear the print queue if needed. Restart your computer and try printing again. For OS X, open System Preferences > Printers & Scanners and check the print queue for paused jobs.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Missing Coloursexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and that ink levels are not critically low. Load plain white Letter or A4 paper and open the HP printer software, then go to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer. Click 'Print Diagnostic Information' to print a diagnostics page and inspect the colour and black boxes for streaks or gaps. If issues are found, click 'Clean Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab. After cleaning, realign the cartridges by clicking 'Align Ink Cartridges' and scanning the printed alignment page on the scanner glass.
All Lights Blinking — Printer Error Stateexpand_more
If the Resume light, Power button light, and both Ink Alert lights are all blinking simultaneously, the printer may have a scanner fault or a general error state. To reset: turn off the printer using the Power button, unplug the power cord from the outlet, wait one full minute, then plug it back in and turn the printer on. If the problem persists, contact HP support. Note that the printer can still function for print jobs even if the scanner is not working.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn off the HP DeskJet 2136 using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 cartridge nozzles from drying out prematurely.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them; if a cartridge is removed from the printer, reinsert it within 30 minutes to avoid printhead damage.
  • Keep the scanner glass clean and free of dust or fingerprints — wipe it gently with a soft, lint-free cloth to ensure accurate scans and copies.
  • Do not overfill the input tray, mix paper types or sizes in a single stack, or force paper too far down into the tray, as these are the most common causes of paper jams and skewed pages on the DeskJet 2136.
