1

Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including any tape on the ink cartridge access door. Connect the power cord to the printer and a working power outlet, then press the Power button to turn the printer on. Wait for the Power button light to remain solid before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black ink cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape, and insert each into its matching colored slot until it snaps firmly into place. Close the cartridge access door when done.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and the print side facing up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper and lower the output tray, pulling out the output tray extender.

4

Install HP Printer Software and Connect via USB

Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the software from hp.com. Follow the on-screen instructions and when prompted, select USB on the Connection Options screen, then connect the USB cable from your computer to the printer's rear USB 2.0 port. Complete the installation to begin printing.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Direct Connection

The HP DeskJet 2131 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimise interference. This is the primary and only connection method for this model — it does not support wireless or Wi-Fi networking.

Connect a New or Additional Printer

If you need to set up the DeskJet 2131 on a new computer or reconnect it, open the HP printer software, click Utilities, select 'Printer Setup and Software', and then choose 'Connect a new printer'. On macOS, go to System Preferences, open Printers and Scanners, and click the '+' button to add the printer from the list.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
First press the Cancel button to attempt an automatic clear. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area. For internal jams, turn the printer off, flip it over, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, then close the door and turn the printer back on. Always press Resume after clearing a jam to continue the current job.
Ink Alert Light Is On or Blinkingexpand_more
A steady Ink Alert light means one cartridge is missing, improperly installed, or low on ink. A blinking Ink Alert light indicates an incompatible, damaged, or incorrectly installed cartridge. Remove the affected HP 65 cartridge, ensure all plastic tape has been removed, and firmly reinsert it into the correct slot. If the issue persists, clean the gold electrical contacts with a dry lint-free cloth and reinstall. Replace the cartridge if errors continue.
Printer Not Printing — Unable to Printexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Check for any error messages in the HP printer software and follow on-screen instructions. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Verify the printer is not set to Paused or Offline under Devices and Printers in Windows. Confirm the HP DeskJet 2131 is set as the default printer. If problems persist, restart the Print Spooler service under Windows Administrative Tools, clear the print queue, and restart your computer.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Faded Outputexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and that ink levels are not critically low. Open the HP printer software, go to Print and Scan, then Maintain Your Printer, and use the 'Align Ink Cartridges' option on the Device Services tab — load plain white paper first and follow prompts to scan the alignment page. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page and use the 'Clean Ink Cartridges' function. Use HP-recommended paper such as HP Advanced Photo Paper or ColorLok-certified paper for best results.
All Lights Blinking — Printer Error Stateexpand_more
If the Resume light, Power button light, and both Ink Alert lights are all blinking simultaneously, the scanner may not be working or the printer is in a critical error state. Reset the printer by turning it off, unplugging the power cord, waiting one full minute, plugging the cord back in, and turning the printer on again. Note that the printer can still print even if the scanner is not functioning. If the problem continues, contact HP support at hp.com/support.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this protects the HP 65 cartridges from drying out prematurely.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from replacement cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk printhead damage.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels in the HP printer software and order replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges before print quality becomes unacceptable to avoid printing delays.
