HP DeskJet 2131 Manual — Setup, Troubleshooting & Ink Guide
The HP DeskJet 2131 is a compact all-in-one inkjet printer offering print, copy, and scan functionality for everyday home use. It connects via USB and uses HP 65 / HP 65XL ink cartridges for reliable color and black-and-white output. This page covers setup instructions, status light meanings, paper loading, ink cartridge maintenance, and troubleshooting guidance drawn directly from the official HP manual.
Product Setup
Unbox and Power On
Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer, including any tape on the ink cartridge access door. Connect the power cord to the printer and a working power outlet, then press the Power button to turn the printer on. Wait for the Power button light to remain solid before proceeding.
Install the Ink Cartridges
Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 tri-color and black ink cartridges from their packaging, peel off the plastic tape, and insert each into its matching colored slot until it snaps firmly into place. Close the cartridge access door when done.
Load Paper into the Input Tray
Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and the print side facing up, then slide it down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the edge of the paper and lower the output tray, pulling out the output tray extender.
Install HP Printer Software and Connect via USB
Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the software from hp.com. Follow the on-screen instructions and when prompted, select USB on the Connection Options screen, then connect the USB cable from your computer to the printer's rear USB 2.0 port. Complete the installation to begin printing.
Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.
WiFi Connection Guide
USB Direct Connection
The HP DeskJet 2131 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimise interference. This is the primary and only connection method for this model — it does not support wireless or Wi-Fi networking.
Connect a New or Additional Printer
If you need to set up the DeskJet 2131 on a new computer or reconnect it, open the HP printer software, click Utilities, select 'Printer Setup and Software', and then choose 'Connect a new printer'. On macOS, go to System Preferences, open Printers and Scanners, and click the '+' button to add the printer from the list.

Important Safety Instructions
- Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this protects the HP 65 cartridges from drying out prematurely.
- Do not open or remove the tape from replacement cartridges until you are ready to install them, as exposure to air accelerates ink evaporation.
- If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk printhead damage.
- Regularly check estimated ink levels in the HP printer software and order replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges before print quality becomes unacceptable to avoid printing delays.
