Unbox and Connect Power

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord to the power connection port at the rear of the printer and plug it into a functioning power outlet. Press the Power button to turn the printer on and wait for the Power button light to remain solid, indicating the printer is ready.

2

Install the HP 65 Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the protective plastic tape from each HP 65 ink cartridge, then insert each cartridge into the correct slot matching the color and icon. Press each cartridge firmly until it snaps into place, then close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper into the Input Tray

Raise the input tray and slide the paper-width guide to the left. Insert a stack of plain white paper with the short edge down and the print side facing up, sliding the stack down until it stops. Adjust the paper-width guide snugly against the paper edge, then lower the output tray and pull out the output tray extender.

4

Install Software and Connect via USB

Insert the printer software CD into your computer or download the latest driver from hp.com/support. Follow the on-screen instructions and when prompted, select USB on the Connection Options screen, then connect the USB cable from the printer to your computer. Complete the installation and print a test page to confirm the setup is successful.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Direct Connection

The HP DeskJet 1115 connects to your computer using a USB 2.0 High Speed cable via the rear USB port. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimize signal interference. This is the only supported connection method — the DeskJet 1115 does not include wireless or network capabilities.

Connect a New or Additional Printer

If you need to connect a new DeskJet 1115 to a computer that already has the software installed, open the HP printer software, click Utilities, then select Printer Setup and Software, and choose Connect a new printer. On macOS, open System Preferences, go to Printers and Scanners, and click the + button to add the printer from the list.

Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
Paper jams can occur at the input tray, output tray, cartridge access area, or inside the printer. For input or output tray jams, gently pull the paper out and press the Power button to resume. For jams in the cartridge access area, turn the printer off, open the cartridge access door, slide the carriage to the right, remove the paper, and power back on. For internal jams, turn the printer off, flip it over, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pulling both tabs, remove the jammed paper, close the door until both latches snap, and power the printer back on.
Printer Not Printing (Windows)expand_more
First, check that the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable, then check that the printer is not paused or set to offline via Devices and Printers in the Control Panel. Verify the HP DeskJet 1115 is set as the default printer. If the issue persists, restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools, clear the print queue by cancelling all documents, and restart your computer before trying again.
Poor Print Quality — Streaks or Faded Outputexpand_more
Ensure you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges and that the selected paper type and print quality settings match your media in the printer software preferences. Check estimated ink levels and replace low cartridges if needed. Load plain white Letter or A4 paper and run the Align Ink Cartridges tool from the Device Services tab in the printer toolbox. If streaks continue, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab and, if color or black boxes show missing sections, use Clean Ink Cartridges from the Device Services tab to clean the printhead.
Ink Cartridge Error or Incompatible Cartridge Messageexpand_more
If a cartridge error appears, open the cartridge access door and remove both HP 65 cartridges. Confirm the protective plastic tape has been fully removed from each cartridge. Reinsert the cartridges firmly until they snap into place. If the error persists, clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on the cartridge and the corresponding contacts inside the printer using a dry, lint-free cloth. To identify which cartridge has the problem, remove one cartridge at a time and observe whether the Power button blinks rapidly — a fast blink indicates the remaining installed cartridge has a fault. Replace any faulty cartridge with a genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge.
Paper Feed Problems — Skewing, Not Picking Up, or Multiple Pagesexpand_more
If paper is not being picked up, ensure paper is properly loaded and the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the stack. Uncurl any curled paper by bending it in the opposite direction. For skewed pages, make sure paper is loaded in the far-right side of the input tray and load paper only when the printer is idle. If multiple pages are being picked up, confirm the tray is not overfilled, the sheets are not stuck together, and the paper-width guide is correctly adjusted. Always use a single paper type and size per print job and use HP-branded paper for best results.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the printer off using the Power button and wait for the light to go out before unplugging — this prevents the HP 65 ink cartridges from drying out.
  • Do not open or remove the tape from HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges until you are ready to install them, as the tape reduces ink evaporation during storage.
  • If you remove a cartridge from the printer for any reason, reinstall it as soon as possible — cartridges left outside the printer for more than 30 minutes risk damage to the printhead.
  • Regularly check estimated ink levels in the HP printer software and keep a replacement HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge on hand to avoid unexpected printing delays.
