Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. HP Printer Software Setup

Use the HP Printer Software to manage your DeskJet 1056 from your PC. Access Printer Actions and Maintenance Tasks to open the Printer Toolbox, where you can check estimated ink levels, align cartridges, clean print heads, and print diagnostic pages — all from one convenient interface.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges. Open the HP Printer Software, click Printer Actions then Maintenance Tasks, and check estimated ink levels — replace any low cartridges. Next, align the cartridges by clicking 'Align Ink Cartridges' in the Device Services tab and loading a blank sheet into the input tray. If streaking continues, print a diagnostics page and then use 'Clean Ink Cartridges' to automatically clean the print nozzles.
Paper Jam — How to Clearexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic jam clearance. If unsuccessful, check the input tray and gently pull any jammed paper out. For jams near the output tray, you may need to open the carriage door and slide the print carriage to the right to access the paper. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, then close the door firmly until both latches snap into place. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume printing.
Printer Not Printing — Unable to Printexpand_more
Ensure the printer is powered on and paper is loaded in the input tray. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Open Devices and Printers from the Windows Start menu, double-click your HP DeskJet 1056, and confirm no check marks appear next to 'Pause Printing' or 'Use Printer Offline'. Verify the DeskJet 1056 is set as the default printer by right-clicking its icon and selecting 'Set as Default Printer'. If issues persist, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Services, and try printing again.
Cartridge Lights Blinking — Defective or Missing Cartridgeexpand_more
If both the tri-color and black cartridge lights are blinking and the power light is on, first check that the pink plastic tape has been removed from both HP 65 cartridges and that both are properly seated. If lights continue to blink, remove the black cartridge and close the cartridge door. If the On light blinks, the tri-color cartridge is defective and should be replaced. If the On light does not blink, replace the black cartridge instead.
How to Clear the Print Queueexpand_more
Go to Devices and Printers from the Windows Start menu and double-click the HP DeskJet 1056 icon to open the print queue. On the Printer menu, click 'Cancel all documents' or 'Purge Print Document' and confirm with Yes. If documents remain in the queue, restart your computer and check again. Once the queue is clear, attempt to print a test page to confirm the issue is resolved.
