HP DeskJet 1050a Manual — Setup, Troubleshooting & Ink Guide
The HP DeskJet 1050a is a compact all-in-one inkjet printer offering print, scan, and copy functionality for everyday home use. It delivers reliable color and black-and-white output using HP 65 and HP 65XL ink cartridges. This page covers setup guidance, cartridge maintenance, paper jam fixes, and step-by-step troubleshooting drawn directly from the official HP manual.
Product Setup
Unbox and Power On
Remove all packaging materials and protective tape from the printer. Plug in the power cord and press the power button to turn the unit on. Wait for the printer to complete its startup cycle before proceeding.
Install Ink Cartridges
Open the cartridge door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove each cartridge from its packaging, peel off the pink pull-tab plastic tape, and slide each cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicks. Close the cartridge door when both cartridges are installed.
Load Paper and Align Cartridges
Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and open the output tray. The printer will prompt you to align the cartridges after a new installation — follow the on-screen instructions in the HP Printer Software to print and scan an alignment sheet for best print quality.
Connect USB and Install Software
Connect the HP DeskJet 1050a to your computer using a USB cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) as recommended by HP. Install the HP Printer Software from the included disc or download it from hp.com/support, then follow the setup wizard to complete installation.
Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Important Safety Instructions
- Check estimated ink levels regularly via Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Estimated Ink Level tab in the HP Printer Software, and replace HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges before print quality degrades.
- Align ink cartridges after every new cartridge installation by printing an alignment sheet through the Printer Toolbox — load the sheet face-down on the scanner glass and press Start Copy Black to complete alignment.
- Clean the ink cartridges automatically using the 'Clean Ink Cartridges' option in the Printer Toolbox if you notice streaks, missing colours, or faded output on printed pages.
- Always use genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges — refilled or remanufactured cartridges may cause inaccurate ink level readings and are not covered under the HP cartridge warranty.
