Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging materials and tape from the printer. Connect the power cord and press the Power button to turn on the HP DeskJet 1000. Ensure the output tray is open before proceeding, as the printer cannot begin printing without it.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges from their packaging, pull off the pink plastic tape tab, and slide each cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicks. Close the cartridge door securely.

3

Load Paper and Connect via USB

Load letter or A4 plain white paper into the input tray, making sure the edges are flat and the paper-width guide fits snugly. Connect the HP DeskJet 1000 to your computer using a USB cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) for best performance.

4

Install Software and Align Cartridges

Install the HP Printer Software on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions. After installation, the software will prompt you to align the ink cartridges — click 'Align Ink Cartridges' in the Printer Toolbox and the printer will automatically print an alignment sheet to ensure high-quality output.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Wired Connection

The HP DeskJet 1000 connects to your computer exclusively via USB cable. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimise interference and ensure a stable, reliable connection. Simply plug in the cable, install the printer software, and you are ready to print.

No Wireless — Consider an Upgrade

The HP DeskJet 1000 does not support Wi-Fi or wireless printing. If wireless connectivity is important to you, consider related models such as the HP DeskJet 1050a which offer similar inkjet performance with added wireless capabilities for printing from mobile devices and laptops.

How do I improve poor print quality?expand_more
First, confirm you are using genuine HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges and check estimated ink levels via the Printer Software by clicking 'Estimated Ink Levels.' In the Printer Software, go to Printer Actions > Set Preferences and verify the correct paper type and print quality are selected. If ink levels are adequate, open the Printer Toolbox via Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks and use 'Align Ink Cartridges' to print an alignment sheet. If streaks persist, click 'Print Diagnostic Information' — if streaks or missing colour blocks appear, select 'Clean Ink Cartridges' and follow the on-screen prompts.
How do I clear a paper jam?expand_more
Identify where the jam has occurred. If paper is jammed near the input tray, gently pull it straight out from the back. If jammed near the output tray, open the carriage door if needed, slide the print carriage to the right, and carefully pull the paper free. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom by pressing the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, then close the door firmly until both latches snap into place. Press the Power button to resume printing. To prevent future jams, avoid overfilling the tray, do not mix paper sizes, and ensure the paper-width guide fits snugly without bending the paper.
My HP DeskJet 1000 won't print — what should I do?expand_more
Start by confirming the printer is powered on and paper is loaded. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. Next, check that the printer is not paused or offline: go to Devices and Printers (Windows 7) or Printers (Vista/XP), right-click your printer icon, and ensure neither 'Pause Printing' nor 'Use Printer Offline' is checked. Confirm the HP DeskJet 1000 is set as your default printer. If the issue continues, restart the Print Spooler service via Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services, clear the print queue by selecting 'Cancel all documents,' and finally reset the printer by turning it off, unplugging the power cord for one minute, then reconnecting and powering back on.
How do I fix a defective cartridge error?expand_more
Open the cartridge door and remove the black cartridge, then close the door and try printing. If the defective cartridge message reappears and the Power button blinks rapidly, the tri-color cartridge needs replacing. If the Power light does not blink, the black cartridge is the problem. Also confirm that all pink plastic tape has been removed from each cartridge — tape left over the contacts prevents the printer from detecting the cartridge. Replace the faulty HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge and close the cartridge door firmly before printing again.
What is single-cartridge mode and how do I exit it?expand_more
Single-cartridge mode activates automatically when one print cartridge is removed from the carriage, allowing the HP DeskJet 1000 to continue printing with just one cartridge installed. A message will appear on screen when this mode is active. If the message appears but two cartridges are installed, check that the pink plastic tape has been fully removed from both cartridges, as covered contacts prevent detection. To exit single-cartridge mode, simply install both HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges properly and close the cartridge door.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Regularly check estimated ink levels via the HP Printer Software ('Estimated Ink Levels') and replace HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges before print quality becomes unacceptable.
  • Align ink cartridges after every new cartridge installation using the Printer Toolbox (Printer Actions > Maintenance Tasks > Align Ink Cartridges) to maintain sharp, accurate output.
  • Clean the ink cartridges automatically through the Printer Toolbox whenever the diagnostic page shows streaks or missing colour portions in the blue, magenta, yellow, or black test boxes.
  • Keep the input tray free of overfilling, remove printed pages from the output tray frequently, and ensure paper is flat and consistent in size and type to prevent paper jams and maintain reliable feeding.
