Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging tape and materials from inside and outside the printer. Plug in the power cord and press the Power button to turn on the HP DeskJet 2855e. Wait for the printer to finish its initialization sequence before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Insert the included HP 67 black and tri-color ink cartridges into their respective slots and push firmly until each clicks into place. Always use the cartridges included with the printer for initial setup.

3

Connect to Wi-Fi

Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled on your computer or mobile device and that you are not connected to a VPN or remote work network during setup. Press the Wireless button on the printer and follow the prompts, or use the HP Smart app to guide you through wireless connection. If you have an Ethernet cable connected, disconnect it temporarily to complete Wi-Fi setup.

4

Install HP Smart Software

Download the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device from 123.hp.com or your device's app store. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete printer setup and register for HP+ services, which help the software find your network and printer. Once connected, print the alignment page to confirm everything is working correctly.

HP Smart App Setup (Recommended)

Use the HP Smart app on your smartphone or computer to connect the DeskJet 2855e to your home Wi-Fi network. The app walks you through each step, detects your network automatically, and also helps activate HP+ services. Ensure your device is on the same network you intend to use and that no VPN is active during setup.

Wi-Fi Direct

Wi-Fi Direct allows you to print directly from a mobile device or laptop without connecting to a home router. Check the Wi-Fi Direct status light on the printer to confirm it is active, then connect your device to the printer's direct network from your Wi-Fi settings. This method is ideal when a standard network is unavailable or for quick mobile printing tasks.

Wireless Light is Blinking — Printer Won't Connect to Wi-Fiexpand_more
A blinking wireless light indicates the printer is not connected to your Wi-Fi network. First, check that Wi-Fi is turned on at your router and on your computer or mobile device. Make sure you are not using a VPN or remote work network during setup, and ensure your device is within range of the printer's Wi-Fi signal. Restart both your router and the printer, then reattempt setup using the HP Smart app.
Error E0 — Unusable Cartridge Detectedexpand_more
The E0 error code means the printer has detected an unusable or incompatible ink cartridge. Open the HP Smart software on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to identify and replace the faulty cartridge. Always use genuine HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges in the DeskJet 2855e to avoid compatibility errors.
Error E3 — Carriage Stall or Paper Jam in Cartridge Areaexpand_more
An E3 error indicates that the print carriage has stalled, often due to a paper jam or obstruction in the cartridge access area. Turn off the printer and unplug it, then open the cartridge access door and carefully remove any jammed paper or debris. Gently move the carriage if it is stuck, close the door, reconnect power, and restart the printer.
Low Ink Warning Light Is Onexpand_more
When the ink indicator light signals low ink, one or both cartridges are running low and should be replaced soon. You can continue printing for a short time, but print quality may decrease. Replace the low cartridge with a genuine HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridge — the XL version offers a higher page yield and better value for frequent printing.
Printer Not Found During Software Installationexpand_more
If the HP Smart app or installer cannot find your DeskJet 2855e, first verify the printer is powered on and the wireless light is solid blue, indicating an active connection. Disconnect any Ethernet cable from the printer temporarily, as this can interfere with Wi-Fi setup. Confirm your computer is on the same Wi-Fi network as the printer, disable any active VPN, and restart the HP Smart app to search again.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Clean the HP 67 printhead nozzles periodically using the HP Smart app's 'Clean Printheads' utility if you notice streaking or faded colors in prints.
  • Always use genuine HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges in the DeskJet 2855e — third-party cartridges can trigger error codes and may void HP+ service eligibility.
  • Keep the cartridge access area free of dust, paper fragments, and debris to prevent carriage stall errors (E3) and ensure smooth operation.
  • Store replacement HP 67 cartridges in a cool, dry location and avoid leaving the printer unused for extended periods to prevent ink from drying in the printhead nozzles.
