Unbox and Power On

Remove all packaging tape and materials from the HP DeskJet 2852e, including any inside the cartridge access area. Connect the power cord and press the Power button to turn on the printer. Wait for the printer to complete its initialization sequence before proceeding.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the carriage to move to the center. Insert the HP 67 black and tri-color cartridges included in the box — these starter cartridges must be used for initial setup. Push each cartridge firmly into its slot until it clicks and locks securely into place.

3

Connect to Wi-Fi

Download the HP Smart app on your smartphone or computer and follow the in-app setup instructions to connect the 2852e to your wireless network. Make sure to disconnect any Ethernet cable temporarily if prompted, as Wi-Fi setup requires a wireless-only connection during this step. The wireless button light on the printer will stop blinking and remain solid when the connection is successful.

4

Complete Setup and Enable HP+

Sign in to or create an HP account to activate HP+ features, which provide access to HP Instant Ink and extended warranty benefits. Ensure the printer remains connected to the internet for HP+ services to function correctly. Print an alignment page when prompted to calibrate the cartridges for optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

Wi-Fi Network Setup via HP Smart App

Connect the HP DeskJet 2852e to your home wireless network using the HP Smart app, available for iOS, Android, and Windows. Open the app, select 'Set Up a New Printer,' and follow the on-screen steps to link the printer to your 2.4GHz Wi-Fi network. The wireless button on the printer indicates connection status — a solid light confirms a successful connection, while a blinking light indicates it is disconnected or searching. If you are on a VPN or remote work network, temporarily disconnect before setup as these can prevent the software from locating the printer.

Wi-Fi Direct Connection

Wi-Fi Direct allows you to print directly from a smartphone, tablet, or computer without connecting to a wireless router. On your device, search for available Wi-Fi networks and select the HP DeskJet 2852e's Wi-Fi Direct network name. This method is ideal when your device is out of range of your main Wi-Fi signal or when printing in a location without a router. Check the Wi-Fi Direct status light on the printer panel to confirm the feature is active before attempting to connect.

Wireless Light is Blinking — Printer Won't Connect to Wi-Fiexpand_more
A blinking wireless light on the HP DeskJet 2852e indicates the printer is disconnected from Wi-Fi. First, confirm that Wi-Fi is turned on on your computer or mobile device and that you are not connected to a VPN or remote work network, which can block printer discovery. Move the printer closer to your router if your device may be out of range, and restart both the printer and router. Re-run the wireless setup using the HP Smart app and ensure you select the correct 2.4GHz network during setup.
Error Code E0 — Unusable Cartridge Detectedexpand_more
The E0 error code on the HP DeskJet 2852e means the printer has detected an unusable or incompatible cartridge. Open the HP Smart app or the HP printer software on your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to identify and replace the cartridge. Make sure you are using genuine HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges, as third-party or refilled cartridges may trigger this error on HP+ enabled printers. Remove the cartridge, inspect for any protective tape on the contacts, and reinsert firmly before attempting to use the printer again.
Error Code E3 — Carriage Stall / Paper Jam in Cartridge Areaexpand_more
Error E3 on the HP DeskJet 2852e indicates a carriage stall, meaning the ink cartridge carriage cannot move freely. Turn off the printer and unplug it from the power source, then open the cartridge access door. Carefully remove any paper scraps, debris, or foreign objects blocking the carriage path inside the cartridge access area. Once cleared, close the door, plug the printer back in, and power it on to see if the error resolves.
Low Ink Warning Light Is Onexpand_more
When the ink indicator light signals low ink on the HP DeskJet 2852e, it's time to plan for a cartridge replacement. The printer uses HP 67 standard-yield or HP 67XL high-yield cartridges for both black and tri-color printing. You can continue printing until the cartridge is fully depleted, but for best results replace it promptly. If you are enrolled in HP Instant Ink, a replacement cartridge will be shipped automatically when ink runs low.
Printer Not Found During Software Setupexpand_more
If the HP Smart app or HP software cannot find the DeskJet 2852e during setup, check that both the printer and your computer are on the same Wi-Fi network. Disconnect any Ethernet cable from your computer temporarily, as a wired connection can interfere with the software locating the printer wirelessly. Disable any active VPN connections, as these are a common cause of printer discovery failures. Restart the printer, your router, and your computer, then relaunch the HP Smart app and attempt the setup process again.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Run the 'Clean Printheads' utility from the HP Smart app or HP printer software if you notice streaks, faded colors, or missing lines in your prints — repeat up to two times if quality does not improve on the first pass.
  • Always use the HP 67 or HP 67XL cartridges for the HP DeskJet 2852e; using non-HP or refilled cartridges on this HP+ printer may result in E0 errors and can void the warranty and HP+ eligibility.
  • Keep the cartridge access area clear of dust and debris to prevent carriage stall errors (E3); periodically open the access door and gently wipe the area with a dry, lint-free cloth when the printer is powered off.
  • Load paper properly into the input tray and do not overfill it — use plain white paper or HP-recommended media to prevent paper jams and ensure the best print quality from the DeskJet 2852e.
