Load Paper and Media

Pull out the input tray and load full-size paper with the print side up. For small-size or photo paper, insert into the far-right side of the tray. Adjust the paper-width guide to fit snugly against the paper edge, then pull out the output tray extender.

Install Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Install HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges, ensuring the protective plastic tape is completely removed from each cartridge before installation.

3

Power On and Configure

Press the Power button to turn on the printer. Follow the on-screen prompts on the control panel display to complete initial setup. The printer enters Sleep mode after 5 minutes of inactivity to conserve power.

4

Set Up Fax (Optional)

Connect the supplied phone cord to the 1-LINE port on the back of the printer and plug into your telephone wall jack. Run the fax test to verify proper connection and dial tone detection before sending or receiving faxes.

Wireless Connection (Via Wireless Network)

Note: The HP DeskJet 3835 does not have built-in wireless connectivity. However, the related model 3840 supports wireless. For USB-connected operation, ensure the printer and computer are on the same network for web-based features and ePrint services through the Embedded Web Server.

Paper Jam in Input Trayexpand_more
Gently pull jammed paper out of the input tray. Ensure no foreign objects remain in the paper path. Do not remove the input tray shield as it prevents debris from entering. Reload paper and touch OK on the printer display to resume printing. To prevent jams: do not overfill the tray, keep edges flat and not bent, and remove printed papers frequently.
Cartridge Error Messagesexpand_more
Remove the indicated ink cartridge and verify the protective plastic tape has been completely removed. Clean the gold-colored electrical contacts on both the cartridge and printer using a dry, lint-free cloth. Reinstall the cartridge, close the cartridge access door, and check if the error clears. If the error persists, turn the printer off and on again. For persistent issues, the cartridge may need replacement.
Print Quality Issues or Streaksexpand_more
Verify you are using original HP 65/65XL cartridges and HP-recommended paper types. From the printer display, touch Setup > Tools > Align Printer to align the cartridges. Print a diagnostics page via Setup > Tools > Print Quality Report to identify problems. If streaks appear, run Setup > Tools > Clean Cartridges to clean the printheads. Use high-quality HP paper with the ColorLok logo for optimal results.
Fax Cannot Send or Receiveexpand_more
Run the fax test first: From the Fax screen, touch Setup > Tools > Test Fax. Ensure the phone cord is connected to the 1-LINE port (not 2-EXT) on the back of the printer. Verify you hear a dial tone when you test the telephone wall jack. Ensure Auto Answer is set to On if receiving automatically, or manually receive faxes via the Fax menu. Remove phone splitters and connect the printer directly to the wall jack. If the phone line is noisy, enable Error Correction Mode for more reliable transmission.
Printer Not Responding or Offlineexpand_more
Check that the Power button is on and the power cord is firmly connected. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable if connected via USB. Verify the printer is not paused or offline: Go to Devices and Printers, right-click the HP DeskJet 3835, and ensure "Pause Printing" and "Use Printer Offline" are unchecked. Set the printer as the default printer if it is not already. Restart the print spooler service and clear the print queue. As a final step, restart your computer and the printer.
