1

Unbox and Position the Printer

Remove the HP DeskJet 1513 from its packaging and place it on a flat, stable surface near your computer. Remove all protective tape and packing materials from the exterior and interior, including any tape covering the cartridge access area.

2

Install the Ink Cartridges

Open the cartridge access door and wait for the print carriage to move to the center. Remove the pink protective tape from both the tri-color and black HP 65 ink cartridges, then insert each into its corresponding slot until it clicks firmly into place. Close the cartridge access door.

3

Load Paper and Connect via USB

Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the input tray and open the output tray. Connect the HP DeskJet 1513 to your computer using a USB cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) for best performance.

4

Install Software and Align Cartridges

Install the HP printer software on your computer, then open it and navigate to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer. Click 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab and follow the on-screen instructions to print and scan the alignment sheet for optimal print quality.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Direct Connection

The HP DeskJet 1513 connects to your computer via a standard USB cable. HP recommends using a cable no longer than 3 metres (10 feet) to minimise interference and ensure a stable connection. This is the primary and only supported connection method for this model.

HP Print and Scan Doctor

If your computer fails to detect the printer after connecting via USB, download the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility for Windows. This free tool automatically diagnoses and resolves most connection, print, and scan issues without manual troubleshooting steps.

Poor Print Quality or Streaky Outputexpand_more
Ensure you are using original HP 65 or HP 65XL ink cartridges. Open the printer software and go to Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer, then click 'Align Ink Cartridges' on the Device Services tab. If streaks persist, print a diagnostics page from the Device Reports tab and, if the colour boxes appear incomplete, run the 'Clean Ink Cartridges' function from the Device Services tab.
Paper Jamexpand_more
Press the Cancel button first to attempt an automatic clearance. If unsuccessful, gently pull jammed paper from the input tray, output tray, or cartridge access area. For jams inside the printer, open the cleanout door on the bottom of the printer, press the tabs on both sides, remove the jammed paper, and snap the door closed. Press Start Copy Black or Start Copy Color to resume. To prevent future jams, do not overfill the tray and ensure all paper is the same size and type.
Unable to Printexpand_more
First confirm the printer is powered on and paper is loaded. Disconnect and reconnect the USB cable. In your Windows Devices and Printers settings, verify the HP DeskJet 1513 is set as the default printer and is not paused or set to offline mode. Restart the Print Spooler service via Administrative Tools > Services, and clear any stuck jobs from the print queue. If the issue continues, restart your computer and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor utility.
Ink Cartridge Error or Blinking Lightexpand_more
If both cartridge lights are blinking, first check that the pink protective tape has been removed from both HP 65 cartridges. Remove and reinsert the cartridges firmly. If the error persists, clean the gold electrical contacts on the cartridge and inside the printer using a dry lint-free cloth or swab. To identify a defective cartridge, remove the black cartridge and close the door — a rapidly blinking On button indicates the tri-color cartridge needs replacing, while no blink indicates the black cartridge is at fault.
Printer Failure or Not Respondingexpand_more
Turn the printer off using the On button and wait until the On button light goes out completely before turning it back on. This also protects the ink cartridges from drying out. If the printer still does not respond after restarting, ensure the output tray is open and the cartridge access door is fully closed, as printing cannot begin otherwise. If the failure persists, contact HP support at www.hp.com/support.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Always turn the HP DeskJet 1513 off using the On button and wait for the light to go out — this prevents the HP 65 ink cartridges from drying out between uses.
  • Periodically align the ink cartridges via the printer software (Print & Scan > Maintain Your Printer > Align Ink Cartridges) to maintain sharp, accurate print output.
  • Clean the gold electrical contacts on both the cartridge and inside the printer with a dry lint-free cloth if you experience recurring cartridge error messages or degraded print quality.
  • Remove printed pages from the output tray regularly and avoid overloading the input tray to prevent paper jams and feed errors.
