1

Install the Software First

Before connecting any cables, insert the HP DeskJet 1500 installation CD-ROM and run the setup program. It is critical that you install the HP Image Zone software before plugging in the USB cable — connecting early can cause errors and require a full reinstall.

2

Connect the USB Cable When Prompted

During software installation, you will be prompted on-screen to connect the USB cable. Plug one end into the back of your computer and the other into the HP DeskJet 1500. Do not connect the cable to a keyboard port or an unpowered USB hub, and ensure the cable is no longer than 3 metres (9.8 feet).

3

Install and Align the Print Cartridges

Insert your HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridges into the print carriage, removing the pink-tabbed protective tape from the ink nozzles before installation. Load plain white letter or A4 paper into the paper tray, then follow the on-screen prompts to complete cartridge alignment.

4

Verify Installation and Register Your Device

Once installation completes, open HP Director or HP Solution Center and confirm the essential icons — Scan Picture, Scan Document, and HP Image Zone — are visible. You can register your printer from the Start menu under Hewlett-Packard > HP PSC 1500 All-in-One series > Sign up now.

Pro-Tip: Do not touch the copper-colored contacts or the ink nozzles. Touching these parts can result in clogs, ink failure, and bad electrical connections.

USB Cable Connection

The HP DeskJet 1500 connects to your computer using a standard USB cable. Plug one end into any USB port on the back of your computer and the other into the printer. Ensure the cable is 3 metres or less and always install the software before connecting the cable.

No WiFi — Wired Only

The HP DeskJet 1500 does not support wireless or WiFi connectivity. It is designed exclusively for USB-connected computer use. If you require wireless printing, consider upgrading to a related model such as the HP DeskJet 1515 or 1516 which may offer additional connectivity options.

HP DeskJet 1500 Will Not Turn Onexpand_more
Check that the power cable is firmly connected to both the printer and the power adaptor. Plug the power cable into a known working grounded outlet or surge protector, and if using a power strip ensure it is switched on. If plugged into a switched outlet, confirm the switch is in the on position, then press the On button and wait a few seconds for the printer to start.
Print Cartridge Alignment Failedexpand_more
Alignment fails most commonly because coloured paper is loaded in the tray — always use plain unused white letter or A4 paper for alignment. Also check that the pink protective tape has been fully removed from the ink nozzles of each HP 65 or HP 65XL cartridge. If the problem continues, remove and firmly reinsert the cartridges, or replace them with genuine HP cartridges, as refilled cartridges can cause alignment failures.
HP DeskJet 1500 Is Not Printingexpand_more
First verify the USB cable is securely connected at both ends and is no more than 3 metres long — try a different cable if the problem persists. Turn the printer off and back on after checking connections. In your software application, confirm that HP PSC 1500 All-in-One series is selected as the active printer. On Mac, use the System Profiler to verify the USB connection is recognised, then run the HP All-in-One Setup Assistant through HP Image Zone.
Paper Jam Inside the Printerexpand_more
Always clear paper jams from the rear clean-out door — never attempt to pull paper out from the front, as this can damage the print mechanism. Press the tab on the left side of the rear door to release it, then gently pull the jammed paper free from the rollers. Check carefully for any torn pieces remaining inside, replace the rear door until it snaps into place, and press Cancel/Resume to continue.
Software Installation Errors or Missing Icons in HP Directorexpand_more
If the essential icons (Scan Picture, Scan Document, HP Image Zone) are missing from HP Director or HP Solution Center, the installation is likely incomplete. Disconnect the printer, uninstall the software using the uninstall utility from the HP program group (do not simply delete files), restart your computer, then reinstall from the CD-ROM before reconnecting the USB cable. A reinstall typically takes 20–40 minutes on both Windows and Mac.

Important Safety Instructions

  • Regularly remove and reinsert your HP 65 / HP 65XL cartridges to ensure they are fully seated and locked in the print carriage, preventing contact errors.
  • If print quality degrades, print a self-test report to check cartridge status, then clean the print cartridges and, if needed, gently clean the copper-coloured contacts on the cartridges.
  • Only load recommended paper types — avoid curled, wrinkled, or torn paper — and never fill the tray beyond its capacity to reduce the risk of paper jams.
  • Keep your HP DeskJet 1500 firmware and driver software up to date by visiting www.hp.com/support and using the Device Update Wizard or the Software Update utility included with HP Image Zone.
